what's up everybody my name is meet Kevin and today I'm going to tell you flat ways society keeps you poor and what you can do to build wealth when society keeps you poor first things first according to recent research by the red fin group yeah that's the website you can go to to look at houses for sale it was previously common knowledge that people were staying in their homes for an average over eight years well that is now up to thirteen years and in some areas like Salt Lake City the length of time people are staying in their homes has arisen to 23 years now initially you might think this is a good thing in fact we're oftentimes told by society that you need to stay in a house for as long as possible to minimize all those expenses like selling costs and maintenance and that's partly because we've now associated home ownership with the idea of being anchored into place that is we here you know what as Millennials and younger people we should be free of the anchor of home ownership and we should rent so we can be mobile well unfortunately for us this conventional wisdom tends to keep us poor as a society see the more often that people move and keep the real estate that they bought before it that is a rather than sell they turn their prior house into a rental property their wealth tends to balloon significantly faster than somebody who either stays in a property forever or sells every time they move so on one hand it seems like staying put longer helps minimize the costs of moving you also minimize the wealth of building Effects of owning a rental real estate and taking advantage of subsidized government loans that is your typical 30-year fixed-rate mortgage that you can get with five ten fifteen percent down and with cheaper rates when you're a homeowner instead of an investor see a lot of people here real estate investing and they think oh my gosh I'm gonna need twenty five percent down to go buy an apartment building or a house yet in reality the easiest way to get into building wealth with real estate there's often times buying the place you live in and then moving every three or four years keeping that place as a rental and building your rental portfolio by taking advantage of these lower down payment and Shi loans but there's a second problem that comes with homeowners being in houses longer the second problem is when people do decide to finally anchor themselves to a house what do they tend to do they spend much more money remodeling the property which unfortunately remodeling doesn't tend to create a massive net worth in fact most of the time homeowners are really good at over improving their real estate now I'm just on problem number one of a five year but know that problem number one is basically what I tackle in my real estate investing courses and programs linked below if you're interested for more knowledge that's our sponsored part for the video so here's a quick example then we'll move on to problem number two on how society keeps you poor quick example homeowner looks at property to buy to live in homeowner spends fifty thousand dollars on the kitchen alone because they want maple cabinetry and the nicest brass hardware and the Viking stainless steel appliances Kevin looks at that same property and spends fifty thousand dollars remodeling the entire property with new paint of flooring Oh rip currents today updating the bathrooms kitchens appliances light fixtures plumbing fixtures and so on so you could see how society actually keeps you poor if you stay in a house longer you're controlling less real estate which controlling real estate helps you build wealth every single month and because people are under this perception that we need to stay in real estate longer they tend to spend more money remodeling when they finally buy also reducing their net worth thanks HGTV now the second problem we have in America is a fear of a debt thanks to the Great Recession we are ever fearful of taking out any forms of debt for the belief that we will be ruined by having a debt unfortunately this means less people are building their credit less people are able to qualify for homes or other investments or safer forms of debt like that 30-year fixed-rate mortgage I talked about in problem number one this has also led a lot of people to believe that credit doesn't matter it sadly become more acceptable to believe that well if I don't need debt I won't need to prioritize my credit score this is also why a lot of people don't freeze their credit even though your social security number and your date of birth is out there how do I know that have you ever heard of Experian and have you heard how they got hacked yeah your Social and date of birth is out there in other words you could be a victim of identity theft yet very very few of us I would venture to guess somewhere around only 2% of us actually freeze our credit to prevent identity theft this is different from like credit monitoring or insurance this actually can prevent a lot of forms of identity theft and it's free to do just Google Experian TransUnion and Equifax credit freeze keep in mind that yes while debt was a contributor to the Great Recession typically the type of debt that was really hurt the most was unqualified debt where teachers were getting million-dollar loans for mansions because they could also there were entire markets dedicated to selling and buying mortgage-backed securities that means that teacher who's making fifty thousand dollars with a million dollar mansion home loan when she stops making her payments ten other people get screwed down the line and unfortunately a lot of people were taking out these what are known as ninja loans no income no job no assets or low income no job no assets or some variation of that like a low income yes job no assets and still getting massive loans people have also stigmatized the debt for example if somebody says I own a million dollars worth of real estate and then they say I have a $500,000 total sum of a debt rather than people saying hey you have $500,000 net worth that's frickin awesome society generally says ooh five hundred thousand dollars of debt and that's a lot I'm just trying to pay off my credit card that's twenty thousand dollars a day so first solution number two we should consider looking at debt differently one of my favorite ways to do this is by buying real estate below market value so that yes you're getting debt but because you're buying real estate below market value you're insulating yourself from a potential crash aka a drop in market values the third problem and I think this one kind of goes without saying is our social media culture has pretty much inspired us to say ooh we're starting to see some success you know what let's go buy a jeep gladiator or guess I killed it working pest control adaptive this summer I must spend my money which I will say if you have not yet seen the video where I went undercover door knocking with active you should definitely check it out because it is very realistic to make $100,000 in a summer door knocking and selling pest control I know because I was able to sell contracts my first day doing it I'll link that video down below now I'm not necessarily saying enjoying your wealth is a problem there's nothing wrong with that I do recommend though rather than suggesting hey I've saved up some money let me go spend it all on a van life maybe it's a good idea to consider investing a little bit first build a wealth base and then go enjoy yourself at the beach where there's really warm water and there are palm trees and a rain forest and really wet microphones the third problem with society is we cheer short-term success which makes us very excited to invest in the latest IPO and I'll tell you most of the latest IPOs have not done that well look it's really fun to say hey my beyond meat stock went from $50 to $200 yet now those same people aren't talking about beyond meat anymore but unfortunately what remains is this belief that we should always be playing the short term and taking our profits instead of investing for the longer term this is why we're seeing so much of this commission free trading with Robin Hood and Charles Schwab and all this stuff I personally don't care and I don't think society should either I think hey you know what I'll pay $50 per stock trade because I'm placing these trades knowing that I'm going to be keeping these stocks for the next thirty years looking I know that might sound blasphemous but then again you are the one watching some dude in a dress a shirt in the ocean holding a lapel mic like it's a handheld problem number five with society I hate to say it but one a free shipping on Amazon has caused some problems in my life I should really start considering following the advice on reddit a little bit more where if you haven't yet seen there's actually this little tool or calculator that you could automatically install in your web browser so that when you're shopping on Amazon instead of showing you what the price of things are it shows you how many hours you would have to work to afford that product I might be a little less spendy with my one day free shipping and maybe instead I would start investing some more money into Amazon stock because it's freaking brilliant there you have my societal advice for you on what you should be doing with your money and the five biggest problems that our society is experiencing now with money that was a pretty lame wave I wasn't good either by the way check out those links below we'll see you next time oh and follow me on Instagram
