01. we are continuing our live coverage of Freedom Fest so you know you could be book smart or you can have street smarts and the author of that book is joining us right now Jim Rogers welcome to the show I'm delighted to be really good to have you so what is this book about well it's really how I came from the backwoods of Alabama to Singapore I live in Singapore yeah and so these are this is the journey on the way there this is all the mistakes all the successes yes yeah so is it true b-prime any people with humility will admit this did you learn more from the mistakes or the victories I always learn more from the mistakes the victories make it worse when you like you you start thinking you're powerless right yeah yeah this is easy mistake make you feel like this is easy that's right you got to try harder than right reassess so what both people learn about you if they read this book what are some lessons that came out of those tragedies should I tell you about my first wife sir horrible mistake you know I ran into her the other day quite brilliant and I was I am so glad I have it so bad I haven't been all these years married to her what am i horrible life at the time mark I wasn't happy oh my gosh am I happy now you're much happier much much much aspirator than I'm not married I'm married to her well you know something similar happened to me recently and I thought oh my God my life is over she walked away guess what that was the best bit thank you so much Oh probably can't say her name on there that's interpret the time I was not happy but now I'm really really really do and so give me give me an example of a mistake you've made that you've turned it around and you you became better well first big mistake I made in the market she came from a triumph I decided the market was gonna collapse I so i bought puts all my money i tripled my money and five and five months I thought this was easy yeah I'm really gonna be rich someday so I let the market rally I sold my puts on the day the market at the bottom market rallied as I thought it would i sold short and two months later i was wiped down and mark the worst part is every one of the companies licensure went bankrupt within two years but i went back on friday banker that lost everybody first because i didn't know about the market i didn't know that the markets could in strange things you have to know about the most investing and being right is wonderful but being right and losing everything is not so much fun but that taught me a lot about the markets it taught me to always have some some reserves a margin of error it taught me a lot of things but it taught you to get back up and try again right well I had to have me some people commit suicide some people run away so people bla bla bla I couldn't do any of that so I had to start over when you're left with no other choice you got to survive right and Here I am yeah so what brought you to Singapore what why was that your baby well I I know that china is going to be the most important country in 21st century I wanted my children to speak Mandarin I was doing it in New York but I came to the knowledge that you really if you want to make them learn it you've got to take them to a place where they have to speak the mothers radish or whatever it is so you're so you're enjoying it so do you ever miss this place Here I am no I saw you come back parts about the country things about it I don't think much I miss much of anything I'd like to be here but you know seeing the world is an adventure for me sure it is my wife says I'm a vagabond she says I'm a gypsy because I'm very keen to see everything right so I've seen all of America most of America seeing in many many times I still come back five or six times a year so yeah other than you mark oh man I know miss anything thank you so much - so what let's say one more because wait you told about losing everything that did change a lot for you something else that they might learn from this book the main thing I'm trying to teach my daughter's is to be curious think independently be skeptical it's very hard to be independent they can't depend on me it's very easy to accept what everybody else is this I'm saying to them you've got to be curious about everything that's going on you have to be skeptical don't believe what you see on the TV and the internet don't believe anybody check it yourself and to be aware of boys and what about them boys yeah he where a boys beware I got two two two two daughters so you want to see where a boy I know about boys yeah well yeah so I need good father who would want to keep their daughters away from voices as possible try fifteen now it's already oh yeah here we go again yeah you can't really stop that as a matter of fact my father told me that that it'll serve me right that someday I'll have the boy just like me try to come pick up my daughter right yep yeah yep it will happen I know I know I know I don't know what to do about it now you can either lock them up in a cell for four years lock them upstairs to let 30 there you go that's that's exactly right that's what you should do it's the surefire way because otherwise what's gonna happen well they keep growing up I tell them not to go up anymore but they don't they don't listen now they don't we always want to grow up faster than we should right so what's one life lesson that we'd be surprised to hear in this book yeah most important thing is think for yourself and and look where others aren't looking all right if you going to be successful you really need to not follow the crowd I mean everybody says it but I have learned over the years that if I can find a market a sector a company that people are ignoring and there's something changing chances are I'm gonna make a lot of money right they're not easy to find but they come along quite a lot right you know right now Zimbabwe I'm investing in Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe most people probably couldn't find on a map but it's been a disaster for 40 years very positive things are taking place there now so I've started investing in Zimbabwe but that's the kind of thing that over the years if I can find new things that other people are avoiding especially if something's been in this asset for 40 years that might be the great opportunities right you're gonna ask me in 20 years I will check with you again we will know we will know then street smarts adventures on the road and in the markets Jim Rogers you're giving me things that you know well we're gonna be right back we're going to a break and we'll be back with our next guest which I believe is Dave Sussman so stay with us thanks for joining us Jim Rogers thanks for you thank you thank you you
