man considered one of the world's most fearless investors, who turned risky markets into a gold mine. Today that name is forever silenced . The passing of Mark Mobius at the age of 89 marks not just the passing of one person but the end of an entire era of global investing. Hello and welcome. You are watching Good Returns.
I am with you Arinma Trivedi. World famous investor Mark Mobius has passed away at the age of 89. He was called the Pioneer of Emerging Markets and the Indiana Jones of Investing because he led the way in investing in countries where previously big investors were afraid to go . He is also called the Godfather of Emerging Markets.
A man who never started on Wall Street. But he transformed the emerging markets of the entire world with his strategy and courage. Born on August 17, 1936, in New York, Mobius was born to a German father and a Puerto Rican mother. He studied at Boston University and then also did his PhD from MIT. But his real identity is not created from books but from learning in the field i.e.
on the ground. He has done many different jobs in the beginning of his career. Worked at a talent agency. He has taught at university and even sold Snoopy merchandise in Asia. Later he started his own research company in Hong Kong and started understanding the Asian markets closely and then came the year 1987.
A turning point that changed Mobius' life. Legendary investor John Templeton offered him the position of managing the Emerging Markets Fund. At that time, this decision was considered extremely risky as most investors stayed away from these markets. But Mobius recognized the opportunity. Starting with just 100 million, his real journey began from here.
He used to travel the world for 200 to 300 days a year. He used to meet the company owners directly by plane, train, jeep and even by boat and camel. Used to go to factories and do research at ground level. For this reason he has been called the Indiana Jones of investing. Over 30 years at Franklin Templeton, he grew the fund from $100 million to $40 to $50 billion.
Invested in more than 70 countries and showed the world that real opportunities lie not just in the US and Europe but also in countries like India, China, Brazil and Africa. And let me also tell you that India was one of his favorite markets. He has repeatedly said that India's young population, technology and entrepreneurship can make it an economic powerhouse of the future.
When many foreign investors were distancing themselves from India, Mob saw opportunities here. In 2018, he retired from Franklin Templeton but he was not ready to stay. So he started Mobius Capital Partners and remained a very active investor even after the age of 80. His investment strategy was clear.
Where there is fear, there is opportunity. Even during difficult times like the Asian crisis of 1997 and the Russian crisis of 1998, Mobius continued to invest and has subsequently achieved large returns. And when he passes away in 2026, the entire investment world will remember him as a person who changed the entire world's thinking about investment.
He has taught that one should understand risk and not run away from it and the five biggest lessons that Mark Mobius is getting from life are that one should always keep learning. Go to the ground, go to the field and by going to the field we mean research the companies. Do n't run away from fear. Be patient if you are in the market and never lose your passion.
Mark Mobius has proved that opportunities are hidden in every corner of the world. All you need is the eyes to see them and the courage to find them. Today, if any investor talks about investing in India, Asia or Africa, then somewhere or the other it is the influence of Mobius's thinking. Because the truth is that today's entire emerging markets story stands on the shoulders of Mobius.
