Warren Buffett has spent more than six decades turning Berkshire Hathaway into one of the largest and most talked about companies in the world. And now one of the longest chapters in the history of corporate America has finally come to an end. At the age of 96, Buffett stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, a position he had held since 1970, and the person replacing him is no outsider.

This is his son, Howard Buffett. But this is not just a name change at the top of the hierarchy, because Warren Buffett is not disappearing from Berkshire. He will remain on the board of directors and, perhaps more importantly, is handing over the company after decades of preparing it for life without him.

So what exactly will change now? Warren Buffett has been associated with Berkshire Hathaway since 1965. Five years later, in 1970, he became chairman, and one of the most impressive transformations in corporate history followed. Berkshire Hathaway was once a barely surviving textile company. Buffett turned it into a conglomerate worth about $1.03 trillion with businesses in industries that have little to do with textiles.

These include the insurance company GEICO, the BNSF rail network, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Dairy Queen, Fruit of the Loom, and even Squishmallows plush toys. The formula was extremely consistent. Buy a solid business, think long- term, allocate capital carefully, and don't get distracted by short-term market noise.

This approach has made Buffett one of the world's most respected investors, and Berkshire a company whose every major move is watched by shareholders around the world. However, the process of transferring power has already begun. In fact, this is not Buffett's first step away from Berkshire's top management.

He left his position as CEO at the end of last year. Greg Abel took on this role. Buffett announced back in May 2025 that he planned to step down from the conglomerate. This announcement surprised many shareholders and analysts, even though Buffett was already well into his 90s, because for generations of investors, Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett had become almost inseparable.

Now the second part of this transition is taking place. Howard Buffett will become chairman of the board of directors. Howard has already been a member of Berkshire Hathaway's board of directors since 1993, and his role is different from Greg Abel's. Buffett himself drew this line very clearly. Greg runs the company.

Howard, he said, will preserve its culture and values, and this distinction could be crucial to understanding Berkshire's future. Greg Abel is responsible for the operational management of Berkshire Hathaway . Howard Buffett's role will be to help protect the principles that defined the company during his father's time.

Buffett has described Howard as a kind of guarantor for shareholders whose job is to protect the company's culture rather than run the day-to-day business, and Warren Buffett says he's confident in that combination. In his letter to shareholders, Buffett acknowledged the reality behind this transition.

Time always wins, he wrote. But Buffett also noted that time has been generous to him. He said he got the chance to see Berkshire reach a stage where he is more confident in the future than ever, and that is perhaps the most important message of his departure. For decades, CEOs have turned to Buffett for advice on acquisitions, succession planning, and navigating periods of market turmoil.

His annual shareholder meetings have become almost a pilgrimage for investors, drawing people seeking not just Berkshire's numbers but Buffett's views on business and the economy.
