welcome back to the market pulse where we are going to dive into the most pressing economic issues of our time and in this video we're going to talk about Howard Marx a billionaire investor who recently made a major warning about the current economic sea change as he calls it but before we do make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to stay informed on all of our insightful content people believe in the ability to predict the future and in general uh I agree with John Kenneth galbrath who said There are two kinds of forecast the ones who don't know and the ones who don't know they don't know now the United States is dealing with a significant economic challenge with soaring interest rates the task of refinancing a staggering 32 trillion in government debt threatens to strain the nation's Financial Resources for the long term now in this video we're going to discuss some insight provided by Howard Marx on the US debt dilemma and explore some strategies for investors in these turbulent times and in the realm of global Finance few voices resonate with the clarity and wisdom of Howard Marx co-founder of oak tree Capital Management with a net worth exceeding $2 billion Marx is not only financially a Titan but also an intelligent Observer of the market trends his investment performance and Market predictions since 1990 are an established Testament to his profound understanding of macro and microeconomic movements now having said this I think what Marx has recently said about current market conditions warrants our attention and discussion in this video now Marx identifies a significant shift as he calls it a sea change in the financial landscape the FED took the FED funds rate to zero to fight the global financial crisis left it there a long time and didn't have any luck getting it back up into what you might think are normal ranges so we had a low interest rate environment which made life very easy for borrowers asset owners it was easy to run a business the economy was was did well we had the longest bull market in history the longest economic recovery in history uh we had very low incidents of default and bankruptcy it was an easy world and if if you read articles about for example Silicon Valley Bank they talk about the Easy Money environment so you mean all the Geniuses of private Equity are not Geniuses we've been benefited from uh low interest rates and for decades we've seen an easy money environment categorized by ining interest rates this decline in rates from 20% in the 80s to nearly 0% four decades later has been a dominant force in the global financial performance to understand its implications consider this lower interest rates make borrowing cheaper causing economic growth this Market correlation for the most part has needed little to no attention from investors as the rates have been lower and lower year-over-year for as long as I can remember however inflated asset prices from stocks to real estate and a high government debt environment has caused a change in how we manage growth to tame inflation drawing parallels from history the aftermath of 2008's global financial crisis we saw the Federal Reserve slash interest rates to zero and this move aimed at an economic Revival inadvertently birthed the longest Bull Run that we have ever seen in the history of this country but as Marx observes this era of easy money has clearly ended the implications Rising interest rates increased loan repayments economic slowdown and potential job losses in the future the gravity of this shift is insinuated when one considers societal Behavior since the 1980s household debt to GDP has soared for many especially those who have entered the financial sector post 1980s declining or lower interest rates has become the norm this perception however is a mirage the reality is that we are at a major crossroads a turning point that Marx has termed the sea change your view is the interest rates have come up and they fairly high right now um but the conventional wisdom in Washington which is not always right in fact it's wrong more than it's right is that the FED probably next year will begin to lower interest rates and If the Fed does begin to lower interest rates because inflation's getting down to 2% their target you don't think interest rates will come down and we'll go back through another 20 years of low interest rates why do you think that we're going to keep interest rates relatively High I think that what I said in the memo is that rates are likely to be between two and four not between zero and two the FED funds rate and uh you know between zero and two is uh an emergency measure and you know rates were the FED funds rate was Zero much of the probably the majority of the time in the 09 to 21 period it it it it stimulates you you can't live on a shot of adrenaline every morning for 13 years and it it does uh uh subsidize borrowers and penalize lenders and Savers and I I and I I describe that as 2 to four so you you see a sea change occurring if you came into this business since 1980 which is almost everybody you have only seen declining interest rates or ultra low interest rates people tend to say well that's what it's been for 40 years that's normal that's why I call the C change because you have to recognize this is an important pivot now Beyond households businesses and governments are ens snared with this web of rising interest rates the common practice of refinancing debts similar to taking on a new loan and paying off the old one becomes perilous in this new environment with higher interest rates and the terms of new loans becoming more and more difficult to work this Dynamic is already manifesting in the commercial real estate sector where businesses once profiting from lower interest loans are now grappling with higher interest expenses and declining property values and the ramifications extend much further than just businesses governments reliant on bonds to bridge debt caused by government spending face an uphill battle with Rising interest rates governments must allocate more funds to interest payments diverting resources from critical sectors like infrastructure and Healthcare now the United States with this staggering 32 trillion in debt exemplifies this quandry while the US dollar Remains the world's Reserve currency allowing the Federal Reserve to print money the long-term consequences of such actions remain largely uncertain however as a intricate web of Dynamics reveal economic challenges Marx offers a beacon of wisdom he cautions against the alert of predicting the future echoing John Kenneth G AB sentiment that forecasters either don't know or they don't know what they don't know accepting the unpredictability of the future can be liberating allowing investors to focus on more rational strategies and their areas of expertise Mark's perspective is reminiscent of Warren Buffett's analogy of the stock market as a voting machine shortterm and a weighing machine long-term while short-term stock performances are swayed by investors psychology or emotions and rea ctions to current events long-term performance mirrors the business's actual performance and as we navigate this C change it's imperative to avoid the seduction of predictions and remain anchored in rational investment strategies now the financial landscape may be shifting but with astute observation and patience opportunities will arise and as Marx reminds us in the world of investing one doesn't need to be right all the time a 60/40 ratio is enough the key is to stay the course remain informed and always be prepared for the ties of change well that's a wrap for today's discussion if you found value in our analysis don't forget to hit that like And subscribe to keep up on our latest insights and remember in a world of investing staying informed is key so make sure to join us for the next video to keep your finger on the pulse of the economy and until next time stay rational and keep investing wisely thanks a
