01. hey investor friends my name is michelle markey and i'm a millennial who is trying to achieve financial freedom i created this youtube channel to foster a community of like-minded people who want to not only get a better handle on their finances but also be able to invest like warren buffett and charlie munger who happen to be my top most financial role models now i know it's a struggle trying to figure out what advice to listen to with everyone out there saying invest in stocks buy the latest big tech stocks and i'm not necessarily here to talk about what you should be investing in and i'm not your financial advisor i'm only here to entertain and educate you i hope so part of what i'm looking to do is talk about where i came from as far as some of my financial upbringing and talk about why it's so important to share this information with others so like many of you millennials out there i came of age during the great recession and the financial crisis with people losing their homes and young people trying to figure out how to get a job in a labor market that was really tight and we all bumbled through trying to get a grip on our finances while paying off student loans i know that i did and it was really difficult to figure out how do i get on a path to figuring out what's the right way to invest and what's the right way to be managing my money i didn't always find many good sources in the beginning of this journey and nor was i always aware of what i should be doing as a young person with my money and i want to reassure you that there is hope we can all get on a path towards financial freedom and even though it might seem difficult right now with the right behavior the right attitude which is like temperament as warren buffett and charlie munger have and i'll get into that a little bit later with the right mindset to be willing to learn how to invest and how to keep track of your finances we can all get towards what's considered financial freedom and also known as financial independence retire early or the fire movement and although i'm not there yet believe me i'm still well on the path to trying to become financially free i'm excited because during the corona times i've been trying to figure out how do i get in touch with more people so that i can talk about investing and i personally love talking about finances and investing so if you're also interested in investing in personal finance stay tuned because i'm going to go through some of the basic elements that we need to keep in mind so that we can have a temperament for investing like buffett and monger and not a lot of people give credit to charlie munger but he was tremendously influential in having warren buffett think in a multi-disciplinary kind of way and think about investing in value at a fair price now you're probably wondering how am i going to cover both basic personal finance and then investing in something advanced like how warren buffett and charlie munger invest and i know it seems like a stretch but we need to have basic finance principles and ways of dealing with math and our own behaviors in order to even start being on a path to towards financial freedom so one of the problems people have is a difficulty with doing basic math and this can instill fear and making you feel stuck like you don't know how to invest with your money or deal with it and should you spend it should you save it should you invest it or give it away and by struggling with basic math principles of addition subtraction multiplication division these math numeracy issues prevents people from achieving financial literacy so it's really important to have some level of math numeracy and if this is an issue for you please go online google and do some practices to be able to do basic math i know it may seem simple like math numeracy is one plus one is two and three times three is nine but there are so many uses for numeracy in your everyday life whether it is handling your family budget or doing um evaluations of social media trends at work to see how a certain product is performing and also being able to just understand what financial graphs and statistics are when you're reading complex financial reports so it's critical to having a good understanding of basic math so that you can move on to more important things like growing your portfolio of investments and being able to thrive and not have to worry about if you have enough money coming in to cover all of your expenses and be able to have some money aside so that you can invest it in your future because let's face it if a lot of us retire at age 65 and then we hope to live to 99 it's going to be difficult living for that extra 34 years without some money saved up and i don't know if people realize this but 34 years is a really long time to live and if you compound money over that time you could go from having sixteen hundred dollars grow at a 24 compounded growth rate over 30 years to a million dollars so i know that's hard to imagine right now that you could start with a little bit of money and invest it at that rate to get to a million dollars but it's doable and it's possible and i'm looking forward to explaining how all of that's going to work before we get too much into talking about compounding which i'll get into other videos there's so much to say about compounding and inflation so stay tuned for that in upcoming videos but for now i want to talk about what's called a knowledge matrix and this is something that goes into what buffett and monger think about with a circle of competence so a circle of competence inherently means something of a circle that you know what's in it and you know what you know so if you are aware of an idea and you can understand it that's a known known and if you're aware of something but don't yet understand it that's a known unknown and then there's another quadrant called the unknown known where maybe you're not aware of something yet but you have the ability to understand it and then there's the unknown unknowns where you're not aware of it and you don't know if you have the ability to understand it and this is important because warren buffett only invests in things that he can understand and that he knows about so a while ago it was very difficult for warren buffett to invest in something like apple he didn't understand computers even though he was aware of it and over time maybe warren buffett's become more comfortable with something like a computer and now he invests in apple or at least some of his investor disciples todd and ted do so i think warren buffett is becoming more comfortable with technology over time and so is his buddy charlie munger so what that's one of the first things that i would recommend you start to become aware of is what are some of the um companies that you're already aware about what are some of the industries that you know and then maybe there are companies in those industries that you don't know about yet but you'd like to start getting to know them and you can do things like scuttlebutting which is trying to find out more information of companies out there that you think you might want to get to know and that you think might be worth your money and it's important that you only invest your money in companies that you have an understanding of and that you could imagine where they will be in 10 years from now because your money is a vote and you're voting for a company to exist into the future by investing in it so make sure you understand what a company is all about what its risks are who are its competitors do they have a moat and i know a lot of these are fancy financial terms that we'll get into in the future because it might not be very clear if i just run off a bunch of financial terms what they mean and what they're all about so to get back to the knowledge matrix just start thinking about what are the things you're aware of what you are not aware of what you understand or what you think you don't yet understand but you have the capability of understanding and gradually those factors will become part of your circle of competence so keep that in mind as one of our next key principles after basic math numeracy and the last mindset concept that i like to cover in this video is what i based on the american psychologist abraham maslow's hierarchy of needs i called it an investing personal finance hierarchy of needs and in this pyramid you'll see i put about six stages that you could be in one being crisis next being surviving and next being safe next being growing fifth being thriving and last being fire standing for financial independence retire early so in each of these stages of maslow type hierarchy of needs if you're in crisis mode you are way in debt you are in serious dire financial straits and your debt and interest payments that you're making on them is way outpacing any of the income you're generating and your spending is like crazy so uh this stage i wouldn't recommend being in the crisis stage it's not fun i don't think any one of us wants to be there and this is where people are bankrupt this is where people might lose their houses you don't want to be in a crisis stage in your list of hierarchy of needs and then next you might be in the surviving mode where you have some income coming in that's covering some of your expenses although you probably still have some debt you're dealing with and this is also where your spending is not the best but you're making due and you have little to no financial assets or savings and then next you might be safe where you have a small emergency fund with a little bit of savings or investments but you're still probably handling some debt and your spending is improving and then next when you get to growing this is when you're finally generating more income than you owe on some of your debt and you're gradually able to um deal with your debt and you're saving a little bit whether it's in your 401k retirement accounts or other kinds of retirement accounts that i'll get into in the future and you're starting to outpace your debt with your income and fifth in the thriving stage we've paid off all of our debt we're accumulating significant wealth across assets spending is more than manageable life is pretty good and then last in the fire stage we've made it we've realized our full potential for achieving financial freedom and this is also known as self actualization and maslow's hierarchy where you feel like you've reached your full potential in life and you feel satisfied and you feel grateful that life has worked out the way it did so with all of these stages i know it's difficult no matter where you are along the rung each stage has its own sets of challenges but also has its own set of rewards so no matter where you are in any of these uh hierarchy of needs stages life can get better and you can also do something to make it better so i hope between talking about math numeracy a circle of competence at its very basic core and talking about a hierarchy of needs that this gives you a beginning understanding of one of the paths towards financial freedom and one of the ways that i happen to think that warren buffett and charlie munger are trying to help teach us their ways so that we can also self-actualize like they did and end up on a path of fire like they did and although they're semi-retired they've not had to work like we do in our younger ages at a job for a very long time they've made it financially so that now they can have fun and to them investing is fun so what i'm really hoping to do is that um by practicing investing that it becomes part of a lifestyle that can be fun and where we can either retire or not retire if we want to but still have a very fulfilling life where we've reaped financial rewards and that we can hopefully achieve greater things and then give back to the community so if you learned something or enjoyed my video please drop a like and subscribe to my youtube channel and feel free to leave a comment or follow me on instagram at
