Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born in a middle-class family. Where his father often talked about the stock market and the economy. Those discussions created a keen interest in investing in him and he started following newspapers and market news from a young age. This small curiosity later made him the Begbull of India.
After becoming a chartered accountant in 1985, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala started investing with just ₹5,000. At that time his father gave him information about the market but did not give him money for investment. He started his journey with his savings and confidence. His first big bet was Tata Tea. He bought the shares at around ₹43 and within a few months the price reached around ₹143.
This one decision earned him a profit of approximately ₹5 lakh. Between 1986 and 1989, he earned a profit of approximately Rs 20 to 25 lakh. Which laid a strong foundation for his investment career. Titan was not a market favourite in the year 2002-03. Most investors considered it just a watch business.
But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala recognised India 's growing middle-class jewellery market and the potential of the Tanish brand long ago. They started investing large amounts at low prices. According to many reports, their average purchase price was very low in the initial years and over time these investments turned into the biggest multibagger investments in the Indian stock market.
At one point, his stake in Titan was worth over ₹11,000 crore, making it the most valuable holding in his portfolio. This investment is considered to be the biggest story that made him the Big Bull of India. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala always invested in sectors that had a bright future. He recognised the growth of the Indian pharma industry early on and started investing in Lupin when the company's market cap was around ₹500 crore.
By 2008, the value of his stake in Lupin reached approximately ₹154 crore. In the following years, the company's market cap increased manifold and it became one of his successful investments. Similarly, he invested in a company like CRISIL because he believed that with the growth of financial markets in India, the demand for credit rating and research services would increase.
He later admitted that selling some of his CRISIL shares was one of his biggest mistakes as they could have been worth many times more in the future. Despite becoming a successful investor, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala faced many tough times. He faced economic crisis, a massive market crash and several failed investments.
But his biggest strength was that he accepted his mistakes. He said in many interviews that he also suffered losses but learned something new from every loss. According to him, only the investor who stays in the stock market for a long time becomes the real winner. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala did not invest only in shares.
He was invested in the story of India. He believed that India's young population, growing middle class, technological advances and consumer market would take the country to new heights in the coming decades. Due to this thinking, he maintained long term investments in Titan, Lupin, CRISIL and other Indian companies.
He often used to say that India's best days are ahead. When most investors choose the safe route, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala made a big bet on the aviation sector. In 2021 he invested about $35 million in Akasa Air and took a nearly 40% stake. Later his share increased further. He believed that affordable air travel in India had a huge future and millions of new passengers would drive the sector forward.
This decision shows that he did not stop looking for new opportunities until the last years of his life. The journey that started with just ₹5000 made him one of the most successful investors in India. His estimated personal wealth was estimated to be over ₹00 crore in the last years of his life. At the same time, the value of the public share portfolio managed by his family and associates is still several tens of thousands of crores.
His success is an example of how long-term investing and compounding can turn a small amount into a huge fortune. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala believed that society had given him a lot and it was equally important to give it back. He supported many causes related to education, health, children's welfare and social development.
He wanted his wealth not only to be a symbol of personal success but also to benefit the weaker sections of society. For him, the real purpose of money was to bring positive change in people's lives. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala left this world on 14 August 2022. But his thinking is still inspiring millions of people.
He taught that great patience is required for great success. One should invest in good businesses for the long term. One should not be afraid of mistakes. We should have faith in the future of our country. Today, his greatest legacy is not his wealth worth thousands of crores but his thinking which inspired millions of Indians to invest, have patience and dream big.
