In the year 2002, a phone call on Dalal Street in Mumbai changed history. On the other side, a broker said in a nervous voice, Rakesh Bhai, Morgan Stanley is selling lakhs of shares of Titan. If you want, you can get it at the price of ₹32 per share. At that time the entire market was running away from Titan.
The company was in loss. The jewellery business was struggling and big foreign investors were withdrawing their money. But without thinking for a moment, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala just said, take the entire goods. At that time, hardly anyone would have thought that this decision would later prove to be the most successful investment in the history of the Indian stock market.
But the question is, how did an ordinary boy, starting with just ₹5,000, become the Big Bull of India ? And how did his portfolio reach ₹45,000 crore ? Let us know the complete story of this inspiring journey. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on 5 July 1960 in Hyderabad. His family was originally from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.
That is why Jhunjhunwala was associated with his name. His father was an Income Tax Officer and discussions about the stock market were frequent at home. Little Rakesh used to listen to those discussions very attentively. One day he asked his father why share prices fluctuate every day? The father smiled and replied, read the newspaper, understand the news, then you will understand yourself how the market works.
This one piece of advice changed the direction of his entire life. He did B.Com. Then he became a chartered accountant. The father wanted his son to have a secure job. But Rakesh had a different dream. When he asked his father for money to invest in the stock market, he was flatly refused. Not only this, the father also said that do not invest even by taking loan from any friend or relative.
But his passion was so great that he entered the stock market in 1985 with his savings of just ₹5000. The beginning was not easy. I made small trades, made mistakes and learned from them. Gradually people's trust in him started increasing and some investors gave him the responsibility of managing their capital.
His first big bet was on Tata Tea. He bought shares at ₹43 and within a few months the same shares reached ₹143. This one investment earned him a profit of around ₹5 lakh. This was his first major success which made him believe that if the research is strong then even the impossible can become possible in the market.
After this he made a big investment in Sesa Goa. At that time the company was going through a difficult phase and most people were keeping away from it. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala supported his research and not the crowd. He invested a huge amount of money and after a few years the same investment made him a millionaire.
After this he never looked back. Then came the Harshad Mehta scam of 1992 which shook the entire Indian stock market. Where millions of investors were leaving the market in fear. Whereas Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was looking for new opportunities in this decline. He understood that fear in the market is always temporary.
But the future of good companies shines for a long time. With this thought in mind, he started Rare Enterprises and established himself as a long-term investor. After this he made many brilliant investments one after the other. But the biggest masterstroke was Titan. When foreign investors were selling Titan shares, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala recognized the future of the company.
He was confident that India's growing middle class, people's trust in the Tata brand and the increasing popularity of Tanishq would one day take the company to new heights. He didn't just buy shares but bet on India's changing economy. He did not sell his shares for years and maintained patience. This patience later turned into wealth worth thousands of crores of rupees and Titan proved to be the most successful investment of his life.
However, not every decision in his life was right. He also suffered huge losses in DHFL Mandana Retail and some other companies. But his biggest quality was that he did not run away from his mistakes. He accepted them with an open heart and considered every loss as a new learning. He believed that only those who know how to get up again after falling are successful in the stock market.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala always used to say that money in the stock market is made not just with the mind but with patience and confidence. His most famous mantra was Buy Right Se Tight, meaning buy the right company and give it time. His second famous saying was Market is Supreme, meaning the market is always on top and no person can be bigger than the market.
This thinking made him different from other investors. Despite his poor health and constant dialysis, he started Akasa Air in 2021. Many people said that the airline business is a money sink. But once again he did what the whole world was afraid to do. His dream was that even the common man of India should be able to travel by air at affordable rates.
Akasa Air 's first flight took off on 7 August 2022 and just a week later on 14 August 2022, India lost its Big Bull forever. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was not just a successful investor but an inspiration for millions of people. He taught us that success doesn't happen overnight but is the result of years of research, patience, discipline and right decisions.
