01. all right so today we're gonna be uh taking a deep dive into Bill amman's portfolio oh yeah and specifically his Q4 2024 moves okay uh we're looking at a breakdown from uh a pretty well-known investing website and uh good yeah I mean what I find really fascinating here is just how this guy you know known for some pretty huge wins but also some uh yeah some big losses too some pretty spectacular losses yeah exactly how he's placing his bets for the future right well and what's interesting to me is that we're seeing this real contrast he's doubling down on some companies right but then significantly reducing others yeah and then there's this brand new edition that I have to say kind of raised my eyebrows when I saw it yeah okay before we get into the specifics of it all can we just do a super quick recap of who bill lman is sure you know and what makes him tick as an investor yeah because he's kind of a legend in the finance world right oh absolutely he's a very prominent figure uh particularly in activist investing okay which means he's not just passively buying Stu St right he's buying large stakes in companies and then actively pushing for changes that he believes will increase their value so he's not afraid to shake things up a little bit no not at all it's like he's not just buying a ticket for the ride he's trying to get in the driver's seat you know I like that analogy yeah and he's had some incredible successes like his early bet against the housing market back before the 2008 crash oh wow but he's also had some very public battles you know like his campaign against Herbal Life yeah that was a big one it is very contentious okay so he's not afraid to ruffle some feathers which I think makes analyzing his portfolio all the more interesting for sure so what's the overall picture of his Holdings as of Q4 2024 right so as of the end of Q4 uh his firm perching Square Capital Management is managing a portfolio worth over 122.5 billion wow to be exact it's 12 b614 b562 th000 okay and it's within that massive portfolio that we really start to see his strategy taking shape especially when we look at his top 10 holding okay so let's break those down starting with the top dog all right it looks like his biggest holding is Brookfield Corporation y clocking in at a hefty 15.89% of his portfolio right and that's after he actually increased his stake by almost 7% this quarter he did so why is he so bullish on Brookfield well brookfield's this really interesting company okay they're a global asset manager and they've got their fingers in a lot of different pies okay real estate infrastructure renewable energy even private wow so they're Diversified extremely and I think that diversity is a major draw for AP it's kind of like a built-in hedge against Market volatility you know if one sector takes a hit the others might cush in the blow right so it's that classic don't put all your eggs in one basket approach exactly put on a massive scale right and if you look at the current market landscape you know there are a lot of uncertainties out there sure Global political instability Rising interest rates inflation yeah we're seeing it all right all those factors I think make a diversified portfolio like brookfields look pretty appealing that makes sense yeah okay now the second largest increase in his portfolio this quarter is Nike a company that I think pretty much everyone listening is familiar with oh yeah he bummed up his stake by over 15% making it his sixth largest holding that's right so what's driving that move well you know Nike is a global Powerhouse right for sure with a brand that's instantly recognizable and Incredibly desirable all over the world yeah but what I think is really impressive is how they've adapted to this changing Retail Landscape okay their focus on e-commerce and direct to Consumer sales has been hugely successful they're not just relying on those retail stores anymore they're going straight to the customer yeah and they're constantly innovating oh absolutely both in terms of product development and marketing you know those are limited edition sneaker drops they create a frenzy every time oh yeah for sure it seems like Amman is betting on Nike's ability to just stay ahead of the curve in this constantly evolving world of sportswar and athleisure I think so and he might be honest something yeah because a Leisure isn't just a trend anymore it's a lifestyle right and Nike is perfectly positioned to capitalize on that okay now for a move that seems a bit counterintuitive at least to me okay he significantly reduced his stake in Hilton worldwide Holdings did by whopping 26% yeah that's a huge chunk that is a lot what's the story there well this one did surprise me a little bit I mean Hilton was a longtime holding for Aman and the travel industry is definitely rebounded for sure after taking a hit during the pandemic right exactly but remember amman's a long-term investor yeah he's not afraid to take profits when he sees an opportunity so it's possible he's simply cashing in after a solid run it's very possible maybe he sees more potential elsewhere precisely and you know it's a good reminder for all investors no matter how big or small your portfolio is knowing when to take profits is just as important as knowing when to buy okay that's a good point all right let's move on to Chipotle Mexican Grill another company I think most people are pretty familiar with he also trended his stake in this popular chain though not as drastically as right so what's his thinking there well Chipotle has been a real darling of the fast casual dining scene for a while now yeah for sure and their stock has performed really well so this could be another case of Amman you know just strategically taking some profits off the table Yeah locking in some gain it's interesting to see how he's balancing these big bets on companies like Brookfield and Nike with these more tactical moves like reducing his positions in Hilton and chipotle right it speaks to his understanding of risk management you know okay he's not just blindly chasing growth he's carefully managing his exposure to different sectors and individual companies okay now for the real heads scratcher okay he added a brand new company to his portfolio this quarter cport Entertainment Group yeah that's the one and he went in big with a 139.6474 Port is this relatively new player in the Leisure and entertainment industry okay they operate a mix of different properties casinos hotels entertainment venues interesting now why Amman is so intrigued by them yeah that's anybody's cast at this point he's not exactly known for investing in casinos is he no not really it does seem a bit out of character yeah but remember he's always looking for companies with strong potential for growth right so it's possible he sees something in seport that others are missing okay maybe a unique business model a strategic advantage in a particular Market or even just an undervalued asset it's like he's sending a signal to the rest of us maybe hey pay attention to this company something big might be happening it could be this move has definitely piqued my curiosity I'm eager to learn more me too and that's what I think makes following investors like Amman so fascinating yeah their moves can give us this little glimpse into where they think the market is headed and what opportunities they're seeing that maybe others are overlooking Okay so we've got a good overview now of amman's portfolio and his recent moves but what's the method to the madness here you know what are the guiding principles Behind these decisions right he's not just throwing Barts at a board is he definitely not no he is a very deliberate investor okay with a very well- defined philosophy and that's what I think we need to dig into next yeah I want to unpack that I want to understand what's driving these decisions let's do it what's his overall strategy all right let's unpack appl's investment philosophy okay and see how these specific moves that we've been talking about fit into that bigger picture yeah this is there's a lot to learn from his approach even if we're not managing billions of dollars absolutely I think so all right so let's dive in let's do it okay so we've seen what amman's been up to you know in Q4 right but let's try to understand the why here yeah the why you know what are the core principles that are driving his investment decisions the method to the madness he's not just throwing darts at a board is he no definitely not okay good Amman has a very deliberate investor with a really well- defined philosophy okay and at its core he's a value investor okay uh which means he's looking for companies that he believes are trading for less than their intrinsic worth okay so essentially he's trying to find those hidden gems that the market might be undervaluing right so it's like finding a you know a vintage rollups at a flea market or something that's a great analogy yeah you know yeah and speaking of undervalued assets Amman has this term that he uses a lot Moes Moes okay yeah he looks for companies with these strong competitive advantages okay things that make it really hard for competitors to come in at steel markets sir so like a castle with a moat protecting it from in exactly yeah it's that extra layer of defense that gives a company's real staying power okay so what are some examples of these Moes in the business World sure so a moe could be a really powerful brand reputation okay like Nike swish for example right everyone knows that swo exactly or it could be a unique technology or patent that gives a company a real Edge okay or it could even be a massive distribution Network that's really difficult for others to replicate okay think about Amazon's Logistics operation for example right that's a huge mode yeah that's tough to compete with very tough so essentially Amman is looking for companies that have this strong foundation and a really defensible position in the market okay it's not just about finding a bargain it's about finding a bargain that's built to last okay so he's playing the long game here very much so yes and I know another key element of his philosophy is strong management teams oh absolutely you know he really believes in the importance of leadership he does and he's not afraid to get actively involved if he feels the current management isn't up to Snuff well he is an activist investor right exactly he's not just buying shares he's buying a voice in how the companies run right but why is that so important to him well because he believes that even a great company with a great product yeah can falter if it's not being steered in the right direction okay so he wants to see management teams that are really aligned with shareholder interests okay focused on that long-term value creation and capable of executing on their strategy it makes sense you can have the best product in the world but if the people at the top aren't making smart decisions exactly it's not going to matter it's all going to fall apart now I remember reading that acman has a strong preference for companies that quote unquote aren't controlled yes what did he mean by that so that refers to the ownership structure okay he's wary of investing in companies where a single individual or entity has too much control okay he prefers companies with a more dispersed ownership base so he wants to make sure there are checks and balances in place precisely because when one shareholder has too much power yeah they could potentially make decisions that benefit them maybe at the expense of other investors okay so Amman wants to ensure that the interests of all shareholders are being considered it seems particularly important for an activist investor like him you know who is often looking to influence those corporate decisions he wants his voice to be heard yeah he wants to make sure that he has allies in the boardroom exactly it's all about aligning interests okay he wants to be part of a group of shareholders that are all working together to create that long-term value right so let's bring this back to his recent moves you know we see this focus on value strong management dispersed ownership reflected in a lot of his decisions I think so okay I'm starting to see the bigger picture here you know his increase in Brookfield for example right makes even more sense now considering their Diversified Holdings their strong management team and their relatively dispersed ownership structure exactly and even his reduction in Hilton and chipotle you know he seen through this lens yeah while both companies have performed well yeah perhaps he saw some potential challenges in terms of management or maybe their future growth prospects okay or maybe he just felt it was time to take some profits off the table Yeah and reallocate those funds to opportunities with even greater upside right and then there's seport Entertainment Group right that one's still the wild card for me it doesn't seem to fit neatly into his usual criteria does it it's the one that has me scratching my head a little bit yeah it's a relatively new company and an industry that Amman hasn't typically focused on right so maybe he sees a hidden Jam that the Market's overlooking okay maybe he's been really impressed by the management team or maybe there's something else entirely at play here that we just haven't figured out yet it's almost as if he's daring us to figure it out you know hey can you see what I see right it definitely adds an element of intrigue to his portfolio no doubt about it and it's a good reminder that even with a really well-defined philosophy you investors sometimes make decisions that kind of defy easy categorization right there's always that element of art to this as well science now I'm curious you know what this all means for the average investor right can we actually learn something from amman's approach even if we're not managing billions of dollars yeah that's a great question you know are there any actionable takeaways here for our listeners I think there are a lot of things that we can glean from amman's strategy okay regardless of the size of our portfolios so we've spent this uh Deep dive you know exploring Bill amman's portfolio his investment philosophy but let's kind of shift gears a little bit here and talk about what this all means for you know you The Listener like what can we actually learn from this Wall Street Titan even if we're not you know managing billions of dollars that's the key question isn't it yeah um While most of us aren't dealing with you know hedge funds and activist investing and all of that right there are definitely some really valuable takeaways from amman's approach uh that we can apply to our own financial decisions you know for sure I mean the guy clearly has a knack for spotting opportunity he does and may this is some pretty bold move yeah not all of them have paid off of course but overall I mean he's managed to build a really impressive track record yeah I think one of the biggest lessons we can take away from acman okay is the importance of having a clearly defined investment philosophy okay it's not about just blindly following the latest trends or the hot stocks or whatever yeah it's about having a framework okay a set of principles right that guide your decisionmaking so it's like having a road map for your Investments exactly you need to know where you're going and how you're going to get there right and that philosophy should be tailored to you know your individual goals uhhuh your risk tolerance your time Horizon right you know not everyone's going to be comfortable with amman's level of activism for example yeah or his concentrated bets right you need to find an approach that you're comfortable with okay and that aligns with your financial objectives so it's not about copying amman's moves exactly it's about understanding the principles behind those moves and adapting them to our own individual situations I think that's a really important Point yeah and some of those core principles that I think we can all learn from yeah are his focus on long-term value you know his emphasis on strong management teams and his search for companies with those durable competitive advantages the Moes the Moes exactly now I think it's also crucial to emphasize the importance of doing your own research oh absolutely you know just because Bill acman buys a stock right doesn't mean it's the right investment for you absolutely not you should never blindly follow anyone's investment advice even if they have a stellar track record yeah take the time to understand the companies you're investing in uhhuh their business models their financial performance their competitive landscape yeah knowledge is power especially in the world of investing and don't be afraid to think differently to challenge the conventional wisdom a little bit you know I love that point Amman has made a career out of going against the grain he has and finding value where others haven't right and that dependent thinking can be really rewarding it's about looking beyond the hype uh and really focusing on the fundamentals right what have the underlying drivers of a company's success okay were the long-term trends that are shaping the industry yeah these are the questions that can lead you to those hidden gems I like that so if we were to kind of sum it all up okay what would be the key takeaways for our listeners today all right so I would say the key takeways are to find your investment philosophy okay figure out what are your goals what's your risk tolerance what's your time Horizon right then focus on that long-term value don't get caught up in the short-term Market fluctuations yeah tune out the noise exactly and then look for companies with strong management teams okay and those durable competitive advantages that we talked about those Moes the Moes yeah and then of course do your own research yep don't blindly follow anyone's advice right and lastly don't be afraid to think differently yeah I like that the best opportunities are often found where other people just aren't looking okay those are some great points and remember you know investing is a marathon not a Sprint it is be patient be diligent and always keep learning the more you understand about the market and about yourself as an investor the better equipped you'll be to make those smart financial decisions well said and on that note I think we're going to wrap up this deep dive into Bill admin's portfolio sounds good we hope you found it informative insightful and maybe even a little bit inspiring y remember knowledge is power and the journey of investing is a lifelong Pursuit it is thanks for joining us thanks everyone c k California e
