hi YouTube it's shael here in this video I'm going to jump right into talking about um a breakdown of the advice that Warren Buffett gives LeBron James in this news clip about how he should invest his money if you haven't seen that news clip you're definitely going to want to click on the link in the description box below first and check that clip out because that's where um I'm going to be referring to throughout the video in the video Warren Buffett kind of says a few things that you're like what the heck does that mean because he he's in the investing World deep he's been in it for decades and so he kind of talks in like this cryptic investing language that only super investing nerds would actually know what the heck he's talking about so I'm going to break it down here for those of you who are not super uh nerdy when it comes to investing so the first thing he says is that LeBron James is going to want to have significant cash reserve and I'm going to be looking at my notes here but I just don't want to miss anything he says that he wants to have whatever he's comfortable that he should have whatever he's comfortable with so that means he needs an emergency fund so the first thing before he even started talking about investing he said don't even think about investing until you have your emergency fund in place most people can probably do like a couple thousand dolls but it ranges it depends on what you feel comfortable with when you go to bed at night you want to sleep like a little baby all peacefully it could be 3 months rent it could be 6 months expenses it could be a whole year it just depends on what makes you feel good enough to start investing after that so that's the first thing is the emergency fund after that he talks about owning a piece of America and he says this again later owning a small piece of the United States and um what the heck does that even mean right like he talking about buying real estate talking about buying land you know it's it's kind of like confusing but what he's saying here if you're interpreting it he's talking about index funds right and he he says by low cost index funds and investing them over time um because they give you a good average decent return but when he says own a small piece of America he's talking about a very specific index fund and he doesn't name it he doesn't mention the one that he's talking about but it's clear when he says own a small piece of America that he's talking about every single stock in America so a lot of people know about index funds like the Dow Jones because that's 30 companies and represents generally how the market is doing but that's only 30 companies um also a lot of people have heard of S&P 500 which is an index fund that has 500 companies that's a lot more companies than the Dow Jones has but it's still just a small number of companies compared to how many companies actually exist in the US so what he's saying um what La Warren Buffett is saying here is that you want to invest in every single company that exists in America or in the United States so in order to do that you would have to buy an index fund that has the entire stock market which right now the one he's referring to he doesn't name it but pretty positive it's vtsax which means Vanguard Total Stock Market Admiral shares that is an index fund that you can invest in which basically means that you will have a little bit of money spread out into every single stock that exists in America so obviously some of those companies are going to fake and most of those companies are actually going to do really well and bring some profit so the average of all of those is what you're going to be guaranteed to get so when the market is doing really well you're going to be doing really well when the Market's not doing so you know hot you're going to be doing no not so hot but basically the average of What the market is doing is what you're going to be guaranteed to get instead of the average of 30 companies like the Dow Jones or the average of 500 companies you're going to have way more companies if you invest in Vanguard Total stock market index um which means it's a very very very Diversified investment which is something that he says um try not to use big words here but he says make sure you have a small um piece of America a diversified piece so he's talking about investing in as many companies as you possibly can so you have your money across a lot of Industries across a lot of companies across a lot of different type of um you know of of businesses so that's what he means by that now he also says a decent price point over time so when he says to buy a small piece of America at a decent price point over time he's talking about dollar cost averaging and I have a video dedicated to dollar cost averaging so I'm not going to spend too much time if you haven't seen it it's right here but basically what he's trying to say is not to put all your money into your investment account at the beginning of the year or at any point really and then just leave it there and not invest again until next year he's saying what you rather do is break that big amount down into small chunks and invest those small chunks every single month over time because that way you'll be guaranteed the average cost cost of each stock um as well as you know the average return He says to invest for 30 or 40 years so that means he's advocating for long-term investing a lot of people um in the world are obsessed with thinking about the lottery like John trying to become a millionaire overnight Warren Buffett is saying that's not realistic for 99% of people you know um what you really should be doing is thinking about the long run right in 30 years in 40 years when I'm really trying to relax and enjoy my grandkids and my house or whatever life I chose 30 40 years from now I should be able to chill I should be able to do that in like a low-key way without having to go to work every day without having to be like 70 years old working because I didn't you know save enough money and so he's saying that you want to do this overtime for 30 or 40 years so that you can benefit from compound interest which means all of those Decades of time your money is just building and building and building interest upon interest upon interest and that is why um he's saying basically you want to leave it for 30 or 40 Years cuz you want to make that interest and want the interest to compound over time all right the last thing he says that I really love is he tells LeBron James to be careful because there's a lot of people who are going to come like blood sucking mosquitoes and try to get LeBron's money from him they're going to be like invest in my restaurant LeBron or invest in my sneaker brand oh I'm to create this new um product I want you to invest in it or I'm I'm going to make a movie I want you to invest in my movie you know at the end of the day he's going to get like propositions and ideas from everybody and their mama who wants his money and who wants his him to invest in them and you know basically War Buffett is saying you're going to hear it all you're going to hear all these people coming to you and asking you to invest in all these different things but the simplest investment is usually the best and so that's why he's again saying just stick with the index funds pick a an index fund that has a very very Diversified Group of Investments and just keep doing it slowly over time and in 30 40 years you're going to be chilling you're going to be all right you're going to be glad that you made that decision instead of trying to pick the next big hot investment that's going to make you double triple duple your money it's like that is probably not the best way to deal with your money and that doesn't matter if you are not you know having a lot of money or if you're LeBron James he gives the same advice all right
