Mr. Jhunjhunwala, what would be your advice to the Robin Hood investors? The boys were interested in all the girls. I became interested in the stock market. Hello friends, welcome once again to Compounding Mindset. Harshad Mehta was perhaps the first big ball of the Indian stock market. But after him, if anyone has been able to get this title then it is Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.
However, there came a time in his life when he was on the verge of poverty. Despite this, he overcame his financial problems and achieved great success in his life. When Rakesh Jhunjhunwala left this world on 14th August 2022 Share Trader Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Passed Away Few Hours Ago We Told You Of The Death Of The Investor Mag The Investor On Wall Street One Of Our Countries Biggest Business Forces Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, then his net worth was 5.8 billion i.e.
approximately ₹45,000 crores. No one had ever imagined even in their wildest dreams that a 25-year-old boy who left with just ₹100 39 years ago would one day become such a big king of the Indian stock market. Our story begins with the birth of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. He was born in Hyderabad to Radheshyam, an income tax officer.
Rakesh belonged to a Marwari family living in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. That is why Jhunjhunwala is attached to his name. His father was an Income Tax Officer. That is why there was always talk about stock market in his house. Due to which Rakesh became interested in the stock market. At the age of 15, he started reading stock related news in newspapers.
That's when he decided that his destiny would be written with the pen of the stock market. But it is not easy for a middle class boy to fulfill such a dream. Half of the life is spent in fulfilling the wishes of the family. Something similar happened with Rakesh also. When he told his father about his stock market dream, he was initially scolded and asked to concentrate only on his studies.
Rakesh completed his graduation from Suddenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai. Yes, this is the same college from where India's famous industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla also studied . Starting out in the stock market. After completing his studies, Rakesh asked his father for some money to invest in the stock market.
Like other parents, Radheshyam ji also clearly refused and said that whatever you want to do, do it with your own money. He also advised Rakesh never to borrow money from family or friends and invest it in the stock market. Rakesh's mother even used to say that if you invest money in the stock market then no one will marry you because the stock market is very risky.
After completing his studies, Rakesh did not have any money of his own. Then he checked his savings and found that he had only ₹5000. Due to lack of money, he started contacting clients who wanted to invest in the stock market. He promised them higher interest rates than the then fixed deposit rates, which were 12-13%.
In this way he collected an investment of ₹1.5 lakh from a lady. His elder brother also brought in some more clients, which gave him around ₹1 lakh to bet in the stock market. Initial Success: Rakesh earned his first profit just one year after entering the stock market, i.e. in 1986. He bought 5000 shares of Tata T at ₹43 per share, which reached ₹143 within just 3 months.
Rakesh earned a total of ₹5 lakh from this one trade. Due to which his confidence in the stock market reached the seventh sky. After this, between 1986 and 1989, he earned around ₹20 to ₹25 lakh. The boy who had only ₹5000 till a few years ago , paid his first tax of ₹55 lakh. But this was just the trailer of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's success story.
The entire film is still left. Big bet on Sesa Goa. In 1989, Indian industry was booming and the demand for iron ore was very high. But due to recession in the global market, Indian company Sesa Goa was facing huge losses. Sesa Goa stock price had fallen to ₹25 per share and most investors were selling it.
Then Rakesh considered it a great opportunity and invested around ₹1 crore and bought ₹4 lakh shares of Sesa Goa. This was a high risk move because out of ₹1 crore, ₹50 lakh was his entire earnings till date and the remaining ₹50 lakh was borrowed by him. But it is said that if there is risk then there is love.
Rakesh's decision proved to be right and within a short time, Sesa Goa stock gave tremendous returns, due to which his net worth touched Rs 2.5 crore in 1989. Learning from the best. You might be wondering where Rakesh got so much confidence from? To know the answer to this, we have to go back to 1985 when Rakesh entered the stock market.
During this time, Rakesh met a person in Dalal Street, Mumbai, whom he considered the biggest influence in his life. Radhakishan Damani. Today, Damani has become the king of India's retail industry with his supermarket chain DMart. Radhakishan Damani's father Shivkishan ji used to work in Dalal Street.
Whereas Damani used to handle the ball bearing business. After his father's death, Damani also decided to enter the stock market. Partnership with Damani. Two of India's greatest investors, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and Radhakishan Damani, met on Dalal Street. Their chemistry was also quite amazing. Rakesh was fond of speaking while Damani was fond of listening.
Damani taught Rakesh the basics of the stock market. Between 1985 and 1989, both of them earned huge money by trading in the stock market and later both of them joined hands with Manu Mane, known as the Black Cobra of the Indian stock market. conclusion. This partnership and their success stories laid the foundation of Rakesh Jhunjhunuwala's legendary story in the Indian stock market.
His journey from ₹5,000 to becoming a billionaire investor is a testament to his skills, determination and risk-taking ability. His inspiring story teaches us that with the right mindset, guidance and perseverance, even the biggest dreams can come true. If you have seen Scam 1992 which is based on Harshad Mehta then you might be familiar with the name Manu Manek.
He was the leader of the bear cartel in the Indian stock market and was so powerful that the entire market worked at his behest. But then he clashed with Harshad Mehta who started such a bull run in the market that Manu Mane suffered huge losses . If you are confused with the terms bull and bear market, then let me explain it to you in very simple language.
There are two ways to earn money in the stock market. Some people make money when the price of stocks increases. This is called a bull market. Others make money when the price of stocks falls, which is called short selling. And when the price of stocks is continuously falling then it is called bear market.
Rakesh and Damani started short selling after joining Manu Manek. But Harshad Mehta did not let the market fall by withdrawing money from banks, due to which he suffered huge losses. Then in 1992, Harshad Mehta's scam came to light. The price of which was around ₹00 crore, which shook the Indian stock market.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala took advantage of this opportunity and earned ₹30 to ₹35 crores by short selling. This was the turning point of his career. Not only because he made a lot of money but also because he distanced himself from stock trading after this. Rakesh knew that the market would fall for some time due to the Harshad Mehta scam.
But the Indian stock market will grow rapidly in the coming times and no bear cartel can stop it. His statement proved to be true. The Sensex, which was around 1000 points in the 1990s, has crossed 74,000 points today. This teaches us that the stock market always rises in the long run. That's why I tell people to invest in the stock market.
If you have difficulty understanding the stock market , you can invest in mutual funds. Like Nifty 50 Index Fund. The Nifty 50 index consists of India's top 50 stocks drawn from different sectors. It is considered a safe fund as it includes the top 50 companies of India which are the backbone of the economy.
If India grows, these top 50 stocks will also grow. The second is Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index Fund. This fund includes the top 30 companies from the non-cyclical industry. Demand for cyclical industries increases with a good economy and decreases with a bad economy, making them more volatile. For example, automobile and manufacturing sectors.
Non-cyclical industries do not depend on the economy and remain stable. For example, consumer goods, products like toothpaste and biscuits, are used by you regardless of the state of the economy. Non-cyclical industries include consumer goods, consumer services, consumer durables, telecom media, entertainment, publishing and textiles.
The top 30 companies from these seven sectors are part of this index. This index has a share of 42% fast moving consumer goods, 20% consumer services, 20% consumer durables and 12% telecommunications. If you look at the returns of different indices, the 15-year CAGR of Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index is 17.66%.
The NFT 50 accounts for 15.40% of the index. NFT accounts for 16.41% of the 500 index and 15.2% of the Nifty Total Market Index. But remember, past returns do not guarantee future returns. When the market falls significantly, this chart shows that there have been only two instances when the Nifty Non-Cyclical Index has fallen by more than Nifty 50.
October 2015 to January 2016 and January to April 2023. The current PE ratio of this index is 19.3. Whereas the 10 year average is 24.4 and the 5 year average is 23.5. As people's income increases, they will buy more things, which will increase the chances of growth in these indices. If you want stable returns with low risk then you can consider this fund.
I would like to reiterate that this is not a buying or selling advice. After separating from Manu Manek in 1992, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala started a company named Rare Enterprises Private Limited. The names of the girls are R.A. Rakesh and R.E. Rekha. It was taken from the name of Rekha i.e. Rakesh's wife.
Whom he married in 1987. In an interview, Rakesh shared an interesting story about his wife Rekha. Rekha belonged to a rich family which had all the facilities like AC and car. Whereas there was no AC in Rakesh's house. Due to which Rekha often used to ask when will AC be installed in our house? in the 1990s.
When VP Singh was the Prime Minister of India and Madhu Dandavate was the Finance Minister. The market was very unpredictable at that time. The new government was formed under difficult circumstances after the death of Rajiv Gandhi and investors did not trust the 1990 Union Budget . There was a fear that it would not support the business.
Due to this, the stock market was falling rapidly and shares of good companies were also being sold cheaply. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had a different opinion. He knew that VP Singh came from a business family and would not bring a budget that would harm business. So the day the market opened at 6:00 am, Rakesh started trading and when the market closed at 9:00 am, his net worth increased from Rs 3 crore to Rs 20 crore.
That night he bought an AC for his wife. Actually, Rakesh already had money to buy an AC. But he shared this story to tell people that instead of spending their savings, invest them wisely and use the profits from those investments to fulfill their desires . Now let's talk about Rari Enterprise which was created to manage the stock portfolio of Rakesh and Rekha.
This company marked Rakesh's transition from trading to long term investing. Was he successful in this new approach? To know this, let us go back to 2003 when Rakesh bought more than 4 crore shares of Titan at ₹40 per share. Soon the share price of Titan crossed ₹880, which gave them huge profits. But he did not sell his shares because he had faith in Titan's potential.
But then the share price of Titan fell to ₹80, causing them huge losses. Despite this, Rakesh did not give up. He followed the principle that when things are bad, sometimes it is best to wait for better days. Rakesh had unwavering faith in his fundamental analysis, Titan's strong business model and management.
Surprisingly, he did not sell Titan shares throughout his life. Today his family still holds 5.1% of Titan which he bought at ₹40 which has now turned out to be a multibagger. In which the price of one share is more than ₹2600. After this, he also invested in companies like Lupin, Chrysler, PZ Industries and Star Health, which gave multiple returns.
This success earned him the tag of Big Bull and India's Warren Buffett as both followed the principle of value investing. Rakesh knew that Titan's fundamentals were sound and its share price was much lower than its real value. That's why he held the stock. However, Rakesh also made some big mistakes in his career.
One of his biggest mistakes was investing in Deen Housing and Finance i.e. DHF. In 2013, he invested ₹100 crore in DHFL. But in 2019, the company defaulted on several loans and its share price fell. A year before investing in DHFL, Rakesh invested in another real estate company, DB Realty, which failed to survive due to the Covid-19 pandemic, causing huge losses to investors.
You might have heard about Salman Khan's clothing brand Being Human. Rakesh had bought 12.7% stake in the company when its share price was ₹7. But by 2021, the share price of Mandana Retail, the company behind Being Human, fell to ₹1. Due to which Rakesh had to come out with loss. In December 2021, Rakesh launched a low-cost airline named Aakash.
Which had launched its first commercial flight just a week before his death. Rakesh saw a big opportunity in the Indian airline sector. But unfortunately he passed away on 14 August 2022 at 6:30 am due to his kidney related problems and multiple organ failure. So even though Rakesh Jhunjhunwala is not among us today, his principles will always remain immortal.
Diversification of Portfolio He invested his money in companies like ACC, Titan, Crsis, CS, Goa, PA Industries and Bindo Pharma. His portfolio gradually grew and he became a big name in the Indian stock market. He always emphasized on diversification in which he invested his money in different sectors and companies.
Long term investment approach. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's investment strategy was quite simple and effective. He always believed in long term investments and looked at the fundamentals of the company. He believed that patience and discipline are most important in the stock market. He always invested in new and emerging companies which he thought would grow in the future.
Investment Strategy Research and Analysis. The most important aspect of Rakesh Jhunjhunuwala's investment strategy was research and analysis. He always studied the financials, management, market position and growth potential of any company thoroughly before investing in it. He never invested without research.
Patience and discipline. Patience and discipline are very important in the stock market. Rakesh always used to say that if you want success in the stock market then you have to be patient. One should not be afraid of short term impact and should focus on long term growth. Risk management. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was a smart investor who always took calculated risks.
He believed that investing in the stock market was risky. But if you do proper research and take the right decision on time, you can manage this risk. So I hope you got value from this video.
