Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on 5 July 1960. His family lived in Mumbai and his father was an officer in the Income Tax Department. The atmosphere at home was one of study and discipline. But in the evening, when his father read the newspaper and talked about the share market, little Rakesh would get interested in it.
He would repeatedly ask what a share is? Why does it go up and down? How is money made ? His father always said that son, there are many opportunities in the market but it requires intelligence, patience and courage to take risks. Rakesh, who was good in studies, studied Chartered Accountancy and from there he decided that he would not just do a job in life but would make a name for himself in the share market.
When he told his father that he wanted to start investing, his father clearly said that if he wanted to enter the share market, he should invest his own money, he would not give it to him. Then Rakesh collected around ₹5000 from his friends and brother and started the real game. His first big deal was the shares of Tata T.
At that time it was around ₹43 and reached ₹143 in a few months. With this one trade, Rakesh not only earned three times his money but also gained confidence that he was on the right path. After initial success, he bought shares of a mining company named Sassa Goa between 1986 and 1989 and this deal proved to be a turning point in his career as it earned him profits worth lakhs.
Gradually his name started resonating in the trading circles and people started realizing that this young boy looks at the market from a different perspective. But the path of the stock market is never straight. Many times he also suffered losses. He lost money by investing in some companies but he never gave up.
He always said that losses are the tax of the market. If you want to survive for a long time, you should not be afraid of losses but should learn from them. This thought made him stronger. His biggest and most famous success was the Titan Company. When people were taking the jewellery and watch business lightly, Rakesh bought Titan shares at a cheap price and held them for years.
Gradually, Titan made him a billionaire and became the lifeblood of his portfolio. Apart from this, he invested in many companies like Crisil, Lupin, NCC, Deltac and everywhere his focus was on long term vision. The speciality of Rakesh was that he did not rely only on statistics. He understood the business model of companies.
We would look at their growth potential and then take a decision. He used to say that if the company's business is good, the management is honest and the time is right then the share will automatically go up. You just have to be patient. He often said that patience is the greatest strength in the market.
Do your own research and don't rush because money earned through shortcuts does n't last. Not only an investor, he was also a visionary entrepreneur. He launched his own airline, Akasa Air, in 2021, showing that he is adept at seizing new opportunities. His thinking was always forward looking and he wanted India's aviation sector to become stronger.
But there was not only money in his life. He would wake up every morning and meet his friends. Spend time with family and pursue your hobbies. He was fond of watching movies and expressed his opinions openly. He came to be known as India's Warren Buffett in the media because his thinking, his philosophy and his decisions became an inspiration for millions of people.
When the news of his sudden demise came in 2022, the entire country was shocked. Millions of investors felt as if their guide was gone. But the legacy he left behind will always inspire people. His story teaches us that even an ordinary boy starting with ₹5000 can create wealth worth billions if he works with patience, research and discipline.
His life is proof that just earning money is not important in the market. Rather, real success lies in continuing to learn, being patient, and growing with time.
