Did you know that Jhunjhunwala 's man once came and asked him why he keeps all his money on paper, i.e., in the stock market, and why he never invests in property? Rakesh Jhunjhunwala smiled upon hearing this. A few days later, to fulfill his man's wish, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala bought a flat in Mumbai's upscale Malabar Hills.
In 2004, the price of this flat was ₹27 crore. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala sold CRISIL shares worth ₹27 crore to buy this flat. 11 years later, in 2015, Rakesh sold that flat for ₹48 crore, making a profit of ₹21 crore. But you will be shocked to know that if Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had not sold CRISIL shares worth ₹27 crore in 2004, those shares would have been worth ₹700 crore in 2015, along with a ₹50 crore dividend.
At present, a few crores do not matter to a veteran investor like Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. From this incident, you can understand the power of investing. Similarly, we are going to see Rakesh Jhunjhunwala 's journey in the stock market and which streets he took in the stock market. You will get to see this in this video.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala constantly listened to his father discussing the stock market with his friends because he was very curious about stocks. So, once he asked his father why stock prices fluctuate daily. His father advised him to read newspapers because newspapers also contain news that can fluctuate stock prices.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala also expressed a desire to pursue a career in the stock market, but his father advised him to first obtain a graduate degree from a college. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala graduated from college as a chartered accountant in 1985. After graduation, he discussed his father's idea of a career in the stock market with his father.
His father replied that he was allowed to pursue any career, but he also said that he would not be paid any money, nor would he be able to work with his father. You can ask a friend for money. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala entered the stock market in 1985 with only ₹5,000. However, he soon collected ₹250,000 from his brother's clients, promising them better returns than HD.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's first profit was ₹0.5 million in 1986. He bought 5,000 shares of Tata Tea at ₹4,300 and within three months, the shares were trading at ₹143. He earned more than three times his profit by selling the stocks. Over the next few years, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala made substantial profits from stocks.
Between 1986 and 1989, he earned ₹2.5 million. His next major investment was Sago, which he initially bought at ₹28 and increased his investment to ₹35. The stock quickly reached ₹65, earning ₹2.5 million. Then, the Harshad Mehta era began. And there were both profits and losses in this. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala then invested in several multi-bagger companies.
He bought Titan Company Limited in 2002-2003 at a price of ₹3, and as you know, it is currently trending around ₹27. He holds over 44 million shares of Titan. As of March 2022, his stake in the company was 5.1%. Then, in 2006, he invested in Lupin, and its price at that time was ₹150. Today, its share price is trading around ₹770.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's portfolio also includes some other multibagger companies such as CRISIL India, Arvindo Pharma, NCC, and many more, which you can see in this portfolio. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has invested in the stocks of 36 companies. If we look at it sector-wise, he has invested 34% in the jewellery sector and 4% in the insurance sector.
Similarly, he has invested heavily in automobiles, banks, credit rating agencies, healthcare, and software. Now, let's look at his investments. What were the strategies for investing in the stock market? First, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala believed that the focus should be on buying businesses, not stocks. So, do n't focus on the price at which you buy the stock; instead, focus on the business of the company you're buying.
For example, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala 's favorite company, Titan Company, saw a 10% rise between December 16, 2021, and January 16, 2022. However, he only put a 0.2% gain in the company from December to January. This is because he was buying businesses, not stocks. If we look closely at Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's portfolio, he has invested in Indian macroeconomics.
This is a well-thought-out strategy. As you know, India 's population is growing rapidly. As the standard of living rises, people will demand better health and healthcare for well-being.
