Jamie dimon is one of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world he's a billionaire and he's been the CEO of JPMorgan Chase which is the world's largest bank by market cap since 2005 and he's also a huge Bitcoin hater for years he has outright called Bitcoin a scam and claimed that it's essentially worthless he has frequently seen on shows like CNBC pushing back against anything positive being said about Bitcoin publicly his stance has been fairly consistent Bitcoin and everything crypto is an outright scam and should be gotten rid of in his most recent appearance on CNBC he reiterates his beliefs on bitcoin and really shows how little he actually understands it Bitcoin itself is a is a hyped up fraud to pet rock back to that really of course yeah he claims that Bitcoin is just a pet rock meaning it's nothing more than a little collectible with no real value just like the pet rocks of the 70s where you would pay money for a literal Rock and this isn't just like a one-off phrase he says it pretty consistently if you go back and watch his other interviews really this just boils down to him not believing in Bitcoin having any real value like many who discredit Bitcoin he really seems to think that it's all just built on the greater full Theory which means Bitcoin is only worth anything because suckers are willing to pay money for it there isn't anything that makes Bitcoin valuable in Jamie Diamond's opinion he seems to ignore things like the fact that Bitcoin is a trustless currency that can move money across borders more efficiently than any bank we get to really see how little he actually understands Bitcoin when in the same interview the topic of Bitcoin scarcity comes up and a fair warning this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard it scarce uh it totally untrue it's 21 million well yeah really how do you know it's going to stop at 21 million because I've mentioned this to people everyone says that well maybe it's going to get to 21 million then satoshi's picture is going to come up and laugh at you all the main problem with this argument is that it ignores literally every piece of fact and logic about Bitcoin this line could only come from someone who either is intentionally trying to mislead others about Bitcoin or has not even a basic understanding of how it functions So Jamie Diamond is claiming that maybe Satoshi Nakamoto is going to come out of hiding and potentially make there be more Bitcoins than the 21 million cap the total cap isn't some magical thing that just exists in our hearts it's written directly in the code for Bitcoin and if you just look at the code you can see exactly how Bitcoin functions including the fact that there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin and actually it's slightly less by a few sets there's even entire books written that break down everything so that you and I can get a grasp on every little detail of how Bitcoin works and that's the point of Bitcoin it's totally transparent also No One controls Bitcoin Satoshi Nakamoto can't just come back out of nowhere and create new Bitcoins out of thin air it's something that would have to be agreed on by those who are running Bitcoin nodes and do you think very many people are going to update their their nodes to make there be more Bitcoin when it would devalue the Bitcoin that they hold seems extremely unlikely even if it did come from Satoshi Nakamoto himself and as we've seen in the past less controversial ideas have failed to be implemented into bitcoin's code so yes there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins and there's not much anybody can do to change that Jamie Diamond then goes on to say that blockchain is okay but Bitcoin hasn't so what do you make then of BlackRock and other firms that are investing in infrastructure that's different blockchain is a is a technology Ledger system that we use to move information we've used it to do overnight reap intraday repo we use it to we're going to use it we've used it to move money it's essentially using this argument as a way to say well other large companies are just investing in blockchain not Bitcoin even though for the most part that is completely untrue he also uses this argument as a way to justify the fact that JPMorgan has its own stable coin that is backed one to one with the US dollar and is only available to a few select institutional clients it's not decentralized or anything but they are still using blockchain technology so regardless of how necessary or useful this JPMorgan token is he uses the blockchain not Bitcoin excuse as a way to say that it's fine that they use it but as you dig into what JPMorgan is doing with Bitcoin everything Jamie Diamond says gets a lot more interesting in 2021 JPMorgan began offering wealth management clients the ability to invest in crypto funds such as the grayscale Bitcoin trust this gives their clients direct exposure to what Jamie Diamond calls decentralized Ponzi schemes and there's probably a major reason why JPMorgan hasn't made a very big deal out of this offering it doesn't look great that they are offering products that promote what their CEO outright calls a scan if JPMorgan as a company genuinely believed that all cryptocurrencies were a scam they couldn't in good faith offer them to clients so at the very least someone at JPMorgan probably sees a future in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and wants to make sure that they don't miss out if it really takes off still very awkward though and honestly it makes you question Jamie Diamond's real beliefs on bitcoin is he really an out of touch Boomer who refuses to even learn the basics of the technology or is he just saying Bitcoin is a scam because he doesn't want it to do well after all Bitcoin was created as a direct competitor to the current Financial system including massive Banks like JP Morgan I do think that the banks who accept and adopt Bitcoin the quickest will end up thriving if it reaches a much wider adoption and there will definitely be a lot of money to be made by banks in a world where Bitcoin dominates the financial system so it definitely wouldn't be surprising to see many banks like JPMorgan make hard pivots and start making Bitcoin a part of their identity especially as it continues to catch on in the coming years but as of now Jamie Diamond is hardly an outlier as a Bitcoin hater a lot of older people who have been in the finance space for a long time have shown a lot of resistance towards Bitcoin people like Warren Buffett Charlie Munger Peter Schiff and many more so clearly there is a large divide especially generationally when it comes to bitcoin if you want to see more about how people dismiss Bitcoin as a useful technology check out my video here on how Bitcoin Cycles give critics the chance to perpetuate the idea that Bitcoin is dead
