do you ever worry about losing money in the stock market have you ever wondered how to invest in the stock market without losing money now that's a one million dollar question welcome to the wisdom inspired talk podcast i am yomi akipelu your wisdom coach speaker teacher and author of blow the cap of your capability and many other books today i'll be talking about investment advice from peter lynch the legendary top fund manager and author of the book one up on wall street peter lynch was a top investment manager for many decades now here are his seven rules for investing number one don't trust the gurus investing in stocks is an art not a science he says people trained to logically analyze everything are already at a disadvantage if stock picking could be quantified you could get a computer to pick your stocks but it doesn't work that way quantitative analysis advanced calculus statistics or degree in economics from yale harvard or oxbridge is not the key to investment success many people with none of this expertise and some who never went to college outperformed many experts for many reasons many professionals in the investment houses are hemmed in and restricted by the rules that restrict the investment company beware of professionals who propose with their complicated investment ideas most of them underperform the average person outperforms the experts says peter lynch a top investment manager for many decades he says it is not sophisticated knowledge you need it is everyday common sense from the marketplace it is interesting that this advice is coming from a guru himself that's worth thinking about rule number two buy into good businesses when the share prices of a good company are down but the fundamentals of the business are good it's best to hold on and even better to buy more because you'll be buying an undervalued stock which inevitably will rise back to its true value rule number three margin of safety the most important thing about investment is to avoid losing money says peter lynch and warren buffett puts it even better he says there are two rules to invest in rule number one don't lose money and rule number two never forget rule number one so how can you make sure you don't lose money this can be done by making sure your investments have a margin of safety for example if you pay 10 to 20 less than its actual value this provides a buffer a margin of safety so that if prices plunge you won't be losing money and of course if prices go up it will produce even more profit the challenge however is to find those undervalued stocks to buy which is where the next rule comes in rule number four do your research do your research into any company you want to invest in you spend months looking for a new home to buy you hire experts to do a survey a solicitor to check the title and all the legal aspects therefore you should not pick stocks on a whim or based on gossip or from the grapevine from what the masses are saying is the next hot thing you should do your research because most of the time the masses are wrong rule number five investing is a gamble you must make here is a thing if you invested a thousand pounds or dollars in the stock market all you lose at the end of the day at the very worst is a thousand pounds but if your stock goes up you have the potential to gain 10 times 20 times 30 times or more in the long run but don't forget it's in the long run peter lynch says that 6 out of 10 is all it takes to produce an enviable result in investing clearly the stock market is a gamble worth taking just don't invest more than you can afford to lose and don't borrow money to invest don't invest until you bought your own home he says and paid off any credit card debt or loans student loans car loans payday loans heaven forbid that you have such loans but if you do pay them off fast and don't even think of investing until you've done that rule number six it's for the long term review your budget if you're going to invest don't invest money you're going to need soon because investments should be for the long term if you invest money you might need soon the market might be at the bottom when you withdraw it and you will be losing money when you take it out so invest for the long term and rule number seven be disciplined and unemotional you must be disciplined and unemotional about your stocks and your shares as long as you bought a great company with good fundamentals don't over estimate your skills or that of a professional invest in good companies and products not in the market a good profitable company with great products or services will always do well whatever the market does because it's not the market that controls profitability its consumers of the product is the consumers of that company or the customers of that company which is why warren buffett's the oracle of omaha says in the short term the market is a voting machine but in the long run it's a weighing machine in other words the market goes up and down based on general trends however good companies remain profitable in up or down markets so remember in the short term the market is a voting machine based on trends but in the long run it's a weighing machine in the long run good companies are always profitable and one more tip if you found this video useful please don't forget to smash that subscribe button
