so it's a heck of a day it's been awesome yeah we've known each other a while but I don't actually know your orange pill story so maybe that's a good place to start was 2013 or 2014 and I was reading a traditional newspaper whose name I will not uh repeat and which I no longer subscribe to um and there was an article about this funny little technology that went from zero to a couple hundred doll based on nothing and of course that got the Speculator in me incredibly excited I said this can go from zero to 200 for nothing I got to be involved could go from 200 to a th000 based on nothing could go to 10,000 so I shipped my ID halfway around the world uh digitally to some Exchange in Eastern Europe uh thinking that this may be a chunk of money I was sending away would never see again um but then I actually started following it I read the white paper I did the work I thought about the implications longer term for all kinds of things from cost of capital within finance and uh different ways it could change the world and then just really became an ultimate believer in in it for all kinds of reasons um and here we are so we've just been buying steadily and accumulating over time um and it's been awesome I I'd like to hear your orange pill story actually that's Og man I didn't I didn't realize that um I was around the same time frame I was working in traditional Finance venture capital and in particular we were investing in internet related companies so we got pretty good at knowing what the internet was good for which was transmitting information um you know all over the world instantly it was not good for transmitting value everybody was petrified of e-commerce didn't want to put their credit card you know online obviously for good reason and so part of VC life is as you know is you go hit a bunch of Technology conferences I went to a Bitcoin conference in 2013 in Miami and uh didn't really have any idea what Bitcoin was when I went and I was blown away because I saw that for the first time you could transmit value using the internet safely and securely and party a didn't even need to know who party B was and so uh I thought of different businesses I might be able to start in the space and then couldn't come up with anything that I thought was good enough so I just bought some Bitcoin tell me about the the Sailor orange pilling story that'll be really interesting yeah so uh Michael has been one of my closest friends for for decades and uh I got into it early earlier right and I would bring it up frequently and then started to have a business in the space and Sor would caution me and tell me you know you got you got a great reputation in traditional Finance you should really think about this and wasn't very receptive to it obviously because he's running a company with a couple thousand people and I would keep bringing it up and he would keep moving along the conversation you know year after year and then during the pandemic we spent a lot of time hanging out at his place in Miami and we were trying to make sense of the world uh you know businesses are shut down stock markets going up and Michael remembers me saying um something along the lines of anytime there's a paradigm shift there's like this there's opportunity we just need to find the opportunity and then I didn't connect the two but I went on to start talking about Bitcoin again as I often do and instead of changing the conversation he said tell me more about that and so we spent weeks talking about Bitcoin and he quickly exhausted all the information I had in my brain on the topic and he said well if I wanted to buy some you know how would I go about doing that so I got them set up somewhere to buy some Bitcoin and then a little while later I'm pulling into a restaurant to have dinner with a friend and the phone rings usually he'll text but the phone rings I'm like oh uh oh so uh I was like what's up and he says well I I bought some Bitcoin and I go okay and he's like yeah uh at the time Bitcoin was exactly $10,000 he's like yeah 10,000 I was like you bought one Bitcoin said no Eric I bought 10,000 Bitcoin so his first trade was $100 million and in like one second I went from being really psyched that my buddy got into Bitcoin to oh like you know I I don't want this impacting our friendship nobody gets a straight ride up and to the right like you know there's some volatility ahead so
