in one of winston churchill's speeches he says to each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing unique to them and fit it to their talents what a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour do we see any relevance of it in this present day opportunities are not only for the elite or qualified it's just how much we are prepared when that moment comes so did ray dalio american billionaire hedge fund manager he's returned more to his investors than anyone else in his space he turned himself into one of the 100 wealthiest people on planet earth dalio learned one thing at a time took one step at a time and reached his finest hour as of 2020 dalio had an estimated net worth of 18.6 billion dollars so what made dalio do things differently to have this frabjous success even during the appalling recession periods family and dalio's first taste with money born in new york his mother was a homemaker and his father a jazz musician in nightclubs as a child he disliked school routine like rote memorization but relished sports since i was a kid i've had a terrible rote memory when i was 12 i hated school but i fell in love with trading the markets with his inclination to manage money well dalio as young as 12 tracked in a paper his earnings that came from mowing lawns paper route and snow shoveling from driveways for his neighbors as a caddy and into the trading world i carried at the time earned about five dollars a bag and i took my catting money and i put it in the stock market in the 1960s he worked as a caddy at the lynx golf club where he got to meet imminent people like duke of windsor formerly king edward viii of england former vice president mr richard nixon for the most part several wall street investors their conversation on the surging stock market instigated his curiosity about it that was just because the stock market was hot at the time one was george leib the then titan of wall street his family invited dalio for family dinners and holiday gatherings their eldest son a wall street trader offered dalio a summer job at his trading firm at age 12 dalio bought shares of northeast airlines for 300 fortunately his investment tripled after the airline merged with another company this small success encouraged him to further his skill in trading and the first company i bought was a company by the name of northeast airlines the company was about to go bankrupt but some other company acquired it and i tripled my money and i was hooked selesly he worked into this skill and by the time he finished high school he had assembled a stock portfolio worth several thousand dollars he educated himself on the nuances of investments by exploring the probabilities read annual reports of major companies discussed with experienced investors even during his college days he continued to buy and sell shares commodity futures caught his eye he found it as a minimal investment but more profitable than selling stocks arrival and stock exchange and a spectator of the 70s recession on graduating from college dalio took up a summer job as a clerk in the new york stock exchange he served as an intern for the director of commodities merrill lynch where he pursued an interest in trading in commodities it was here he witnessed the effects of the international financial crisis of the 1970s president nixon's decision to separate the dollar and the value of gold changed everything subsequently the exchange rates of the major currencies around the world were fixed and the price of gold was set at 35 dollars an ounce the next day stock prices rose by 33 percent in order to be an effective investor one has to bet against the consensus and be right and it's not easy to bet against the consensus and be right over the following decades a period of continuous inflation began the prices of many commodities volleyed up intensely dalio's in-person experience of these confusing times taught him the importance of exchange rates the vulnerability of the trading sector and unforeseen decisions of great leaders that changed the vector of one's normal life following this he decided to master the discrete side of the financial world founding bridgewater's association and his trade ventures during the summer break in harvard academics dalio created bridgewater associates along with his friends their goal was to trade commodities due to lack of experience the venture returned slight profits yet dalio retained the name bridgewater associate for future purpose in 1973 he spent a year at dominic and dominic llc before working for shearson hayden stone as a traitor he worked at shearson hayden stone as futures trader and broker later though dalio was fired by shearson his trading clients from there chose him to manage their money with this capital he was able to start his assessment management fund he once again kickstarted bridgewater associates out of his two-bedroom apartment in new york at the onset dalio advised on currency exchange and interest rates risks for a few corporate clients a paid subscription research report called daily observations was published by bridgewater associates it meticulously analyzed global market trends their breakthrough came when mcdonald's signed as their giant client in 1985 bridgewater signed the world bank's employee retirement fund and then kodak's retirement system followed in 1989 as his firm started to grow in size and profits dalio burned a particular element into his life that's integrity in his book principles he mentions that radical transparency is one kind of management style as long as open analysis and open criticisms of fellow employees bring positive contribution it was encouraged but there was no place for secrecy gossip and backbiting every meeting is taped and made accessible for the organization this transparency has no bounds even clients have access to their daily newsletter i wanted to have an idea meritocracy in which the best ideas would win out and we literally tape almost all conversations and let everybody see everything because if we didn't do that we couldn't really have an ibm meritocracy monthly performance updates a quarterly review and frequent conference call briefings no one is left behind nor behind the blinds dalio practiced an approach called global macro based on broad systematic factors around the globe he explored market history analyzed the unique incidents which paved the way for new concepts in managing currency exchange rates commodity prices inflation and gdp growth in the economical world to top it all in 1991 bridgewater started a new hedge fund called pure alpha it denotes the difference between the overall average returns of a given market considered beta and those that exceed the market return called alpha bridge water strategy is based on these terms pure alpha has become bridgewater's flagship fund earning an average annual yield of 18 from 1991 to 2005 it plunged for only three losing years yet not more than four percent bridgewater's clients were institutional investors foreign governments central banks pension funds university endowments and several charitable foundations by 2005 dalio bought large entities including 196 billion dollar california public employees retirement system calpers the 27 billion pennsylvania state employees retirement system melbourne based national australia bank ltd the corporate pension fund of hartford connecticut-based united technologies corp nabisco mcdonald's and general motors and a sector of government-run sovereign wealth funds such as that of singapore by 2007 under the management the total assets of bridgewaters increased to 50 billion dollars that was from 33 billion seven years earlier the prophet who sounded the alarm of the 2008 recession one can call dalio a marketing profit in 2007 barron's magazine had mentioned nobody was better prepared for the global market crash than bridgewater's clients and subscribers to its daily observations it states that bridgewater associates began sounding alarms in the spring of 2007 about the dangers of excessive financial leverage it happened when bridgewater's researchers on examining the public records of most of the world's largest financial entities revealed that the estimated future liabilities to bad debts summed up to 839 billion dollars dalio discussed this critical situation along with these findings with the u.s treasury department and government economic advisors great pleasure and a great honor to be able to appear before you in examination with what is going wrong with our economy the economy is now flat teetering on the brink of failure the debts increased more than the income and the economy was headed for a major setback or de-leveraging dalio's firm had made exceeding investments in u.s treasury bonds japanese yen and gold in 2008 for seeing that u.s home mortgage finances were stepping into a bottomless pit of bankruptcy bridgewater's pure alpha fund sidestepped much of the 2008 stock market downfall for its investors they pulled out of large banks including the lehman brothers and bear stearns a week later bear stearns collapsed and an economic recession was set in financial markets were in chaos and the aftermath was indescribable in recession yet as most investment funds posted massive losses things were seemingly different with bridgewater's pure alpha fund it posted profits of nine and a half percent following year dalio shared his thoughts on the deleveraging process in an essay called a template for understanding what's going on dalio's approach became a massive analysis by the financial market experts despite evading the financial crisis to an extent in 2009 when the financial performance was higher than expected dow jones industrial average increased by 19 percent but pure alpha fund earned just two percent to four percent in 2010 bridgewater's pure alpha fund increased by 45 percent or 15 billion dollars which was further than the collective profits of google amazon yahoo and ebay he was persuaded to take the company public away but declined because it would diminish the essential identity of the bridgewaters a baseline of dalio's strategy was that bridgewaters must excel invariably to any financial weather dalio plans two new funds following the financial crisis period bridgewater unlocked two new funds all weather and pure alpha major markets pure alpha major markets was initially funded with 42.5 billion dollars from its existing clients its strategy is quite alike to that of the unique pure alpha nevertheless with much strong attention on the european bond market by 2011 bridgewater became the largest hedge fund in the world riding high in 2011 dalio's firm stated its returns were close to 23 percent when that crisis period made the average hedge fund lose four percent or more that year dalio earned 3.9 billion dollars placing his net worth at 11 billion dollars in july 2011 dalio officially changed his designation from ceo of bridgewater associates to mentor he serves as co-chief investment officer bridgewater remarkably earned its
