01. Most people watching this video have a portfolio that looks roughly the same. Some US stocks, maybe some bonds, a savings account on the side, perhaps a 401k that's been sitting on autopilot for years, and for most a financial history that was feeny. That was the responsible sensible thing to do, but Ray Dalio, the man who has spent five decades studying every major debt collapse in recorded history, who manages over $150 billion at Bridgewater Associates and predicted the 2008 financial crisis when almost nobody else did, is saying something very specific and very alarming right now.

02. He is saying that we are in the late stages of a debt cycle the likes of which most living people have never experienced, and in his own words, written publicly at the end of 2025, 2027 is shaping up to be very messy. Not uncertain, not challenging, very messy. The question this video is going to answer is the one that actually matters.

03. In a world where Dalio himself is calling 2027 potentially catastrophic, what does the 10% of investors who will come out on the other side actually own right now? Because it's not a secret. Dalio has told us multiple times in interviews, in his posts on X, at the Greenwich Economic Forum, in his new book, the blueprint is out there.

04. Most people just haven't been paying attention. Today, we pay attention. Before we go further, if this kind of content helps you think more clearly about your financial future, hit the like button and subscribe right now. We put out this level of analysis every single week, and it genuinely makes a difference knowing you're here.

05. All right. Let's build a portfolio that survives what's coming. First, let's understand why Dalio is drawing that line so clearly between the 10% and everyone else. It comes down to one fundamental distinction, the difference between nominal wealth and real wealth. Nominal wealth is the number you see on your brokerage statement.

06. It goes up, you feel good. Real wealth is what that number can actually buy, how much purchasing power it represents in the real world. And Dalio has given us a data point from 2025 that perfectly captures why this distinction is everything. The S&P 500 returned approximately 18% in dollar terms last year.

07. 18%. Most investors saw that and felt relief. But when you measure that same return in gold, in something that can't be printed, that governments can't manufacture out of thin air, the S&P 500 actually fell 28%. The stock market went up 18% in paper dollars and down 28% in real terms. That is the trap that 90% of portfolios are sitting inside right now.

08. Running in place, or worse, moving backwards while believing they're moving forward. The 10% who understand this distinction don't measure their wealth in dollars. They measure it in purchasing power, and that one shift in thinking changes everything about what they own. So, let's go through what they actually hold.

09. The first asset the 10% own, and this is the one Dalio has been most vocal about, especially throughout 2025, is gold. Not a little gold. Not a token gold position to say they tried. A serious, strategic, intentional allocation to gold. At the Greenwich Economic Forum in October 2025, Dalio told the room directly that the optimal portfolio allocation to gold is 15%, not 5%, not the conventional wisdom of 1 or 2%.

10. 15%. He explained the logic clearly. Gold is the one asset in your portfolio that does well precisely when everything else goes down, because everything else in a standard portfolio is credit dependent. Stocks depend on earnings growth. Bonds depend on governments honoring their debts. Real estate depends on credit markets.

11. Gold depends on nothing but its own scarcity. It is in in his exact framing, the only asset that is not somebody else's liability. And 2025 proved this with extraordinary force. Gold returned 67% in dollar terms in 2025. 67%. That's not gold's average annual return. Its average over 30 years is less than 8%.

12. That 67% gain is the market screaming something. It is the global investment community voting with trillions of dollars that they no longer fully trust fiat currency. That they no longer fully trust the US government's ability to manage its debt without printing money. Dalio tied this directly to history.

13. The last time the dollar experienced this kind of flight to gold was the early 1970s. Just before one of the most brutal decades of inflation in American history. Gold has been valued as money for thousands of years across almost every civilization on earth. Every fiat currency that has ever competed with it has eventually lost.

14. The 10% know this. They own gold accordingly. The second thing the 10% own is inflation protected sovereign debt. Specifically, Treasury inflation protected securities known as TIPS. Dalio has been unambiguous about this too. Speaking with David Rubenstein, he called inflation indexed bonds the safest investment available right now for anyone who wants to stay in the bond market without being destroyed by currency debasement.

15. The reason is structural. A regular Treasury bond promises to pay you a fixed number of dollars regardless of what those dollars are worth when you get them back. If inflation runs at 6% and your bond yields 4%, you've lost 2% of real purchasing power every single year you hold it. TIPS are designed differently.

16. Their principal value adjusts with the consumer price index, which means your return is guaranteed to be a real return, a return above inflation. Dalio described it as getting a bit over 2% real return above inflation, and he distinguished this sharply from speculation. He cautioned individual investors not to be trading in and out of markets, not to be chasing returns, but to secure a guaranteed real return through inflation-linked debt and build from there.

17. Most people's bond allocation right now is in conventional fixed-rate instruments, exactly the category getting quietly demolished by inflation. The 10% swapped those out for TIPS a long time ago. The third thing the 10% own, and this one surprises most. American investors is significant international equity exposure.

18. Not a small international tilt, not a token emerging market ETF they forgot about. Meaningful, intentional, globally diversified stock market exposure that is not anchored to the United States. Dalio's data from 2025 is devastating for the US-centric investor. European stocks outperformed the US market by 23 percentage points.

19. Chinese equities outperformed by 21 points. UK stocks beat the US by 19 points. Japanese equities outperformed by 10 points. Emerging markets as a whole returned 34% while the S&P came in twos in real purchasing power terms was losing ground. Dalio described this as the beginning of a major wealth transfer, capital flowing away from US-centric assets as the world begins to price in the weakening of dollar dominance, and he tied it to his big debt cycle framework.

20. Historically, when the dominant global power enters the late stages of its debt cycle, international assets begin to outperform. It happened with the British pound. It happened with other reserve currencies before it. Dalio is saying it is happening now with the dollar. The 10% didn't wait for consensus to catch up with this.

21. They diversified globally years ago, and in 2025 that bet paid off in an historic fashion. Bridgewater's own portfolio reflects this, holding massive positions in emerging market ETFs spanning thousands of international companies across Brazil, India, China, South Africa, and beyond. They 10% think in purchasing power and purchasing power is increasingly being generated outside the United States.

22. The fourth thing the 10% own is something conceptual rather than a single asset class. And it's arguably the most important of everything on this list. It is the architecture of their portfolio itself. The design principle, Dalio has called it the holy grail of investing. 15 good uncorrelated return streams.

23. He has explained the mathematics behind this publicly and repeatedly. When you combine 15 assets that don't move together, that is when one goes up, another doesn't necessarily follow, and when one goes down, another doesn't necessarily crash alongside it. You reduce your total portfolio risk by approximately 80% without reducing your average return.

24. Think about that. 80% less volatility, same average return. That is an extraordinary trade-off, and it's available to any investor willing to think structurally about their portfolio rather than just chasing the hottest asset class at the moment. The 90% own portfolios that are deeply correlated, US stocks, US bonds, and US dollars, all of which in the environment Dalio is describing, tend to fall together when dollar confidence erodes.

25. The 10% have broken that correlation. They own gold, which moves inversely to dollar confidence. They own tips, which protect against the inflation that threatens everything else. They own international equities, which thrive when US assets weaken. They own commodities, which tend to rise with inflation.

26. They've built a machine that is designed to function in any economic environment what Dalio's famous all-weather portfolio was built to do from the beginning. The fifth and final thing the 10% own, and this is perhaps the most underrated one, is a clear-eyed view of purchasing power over time and the discipline to measure their progress in real terms.

27. Dalio has said it plainly, "Look at the value of your portfolio in inflation-adjusted terms, not nominal terms. Most people don't do this. They see their account balance grow from 300,000 to 320,000 in a year, and they feel like they made $20,000. But, if inflation ran at 7% that year, the purchasing power of their $300,000 portfolio actually declined.

28. They didn't gain 20,000, they fell behind. And in an environment where the dollar fell more against a basket of major currencies in the first half of 2025 alone than it had in any comparable period since 1973. This gap between nominal and real wealth is not academic. It is the difference between financial security in retirement and a very uncomfortable surprise." The 10% track their real purchasing power.

29. They know that a 50-year history of the dollar shows it has lost nearly 90% of its purchasing power, that $100 today has the same buying power as $12 in 1970. They have internalized that this erosion is structural, not temporary, and they build their portfolios accordingly. Now, let's be honest about something important.

30. Dalio is not saying this transition will be smooth. He predicted in his own year-end 2025 reflection that 2027 is shaping up to be very messy, driven by the purchasing power crisis becoming the top political issue, by growing wealth inequality between those who own assets and those who don't, and by a global monetary order that is actively shifting away from dollar dominance.

31. He compared America's current debt trajectory to Ernest Hemingway's famous line about bankruptcy. It happens gradually, then all at once. The gradual part has been happening for decades. The all at once part is what his models suggest is coming. And he has been explicit about the structural trigger.

32. Nearly $10 trillion of US debt needs to be rolled over in the near term. At a time when foreign buyers of the countries and central banks that have historically absorbed American debt are actively reducing their holdings of US Treasuries and buying gold instead. Central banks around the world bought gold at record levels in recent years.

33. They didn't do that because gold is trendy. They did it because they are quietly, systematically preparing for a world in which the dollar is no longer the unquestioned reserve currency. Here's the bottom line. The 10% who will come through what Dalio is describing are not geniuses. They didn't crack some secret code.

34. They simply did one thing that most people refuse to do. They took the warning seriously. They studied history, and they built their portfolios not for the world as it was, but for the world as it is becoming. Gold at a meaningful allocation, 15%. Inflation-protected bonds replacing conventional fixed-rate debt, real international equity diversification, not just a token international fund.

35. A portfolio architecture built on uncorrelated assets, not correlated bets on American prosperity. And the discipline of measuring wealth in real purchasing power, not nominal dollar figures. That is the playbook. It is not complicated. It is not glamorous. But in the environment Dalio has spent his entire career studying and is now warning about with more urgency than ever before, it is the playbook that survives.

36. The question is not whether you agree with Ray Dalio. The question is whether you are willing to act before it becomes obvious to everyone else that he was right. Because by then, the window will have already closed. If this video helped clarify where you need to move your money, and more importantly, why, share it with someone in your life who needs to hear it.

37. The more people understand what's actually happening to their savings, the better prepared we all are for what's coming. Subscribe to the channel if you haven't already, and I'll see you in the next one.
