Welcome to Value Vest Daily. This video focuses on one number: 57%. Based on current data center construction, that is the adjusted EBITDA margin that Nebius Group likely needs to reach the operating break-even point. Nebius currently projects approximately 40%. This 17-point gap represents the specific cash flow needed to cover the depreciation of your ongoing data center deployment .

Three months ago, this requirement seemed even more pronounced. The estimated break-even point level was 70 %. The 13-point improvement over the last 90 days did not come from a change in energy costs or better hardware prices. It came from a single accounting change in a footnote. In AI infrastructure, a single sentence in a letter to shareholders can alter how the market perceives profitability.

Understanding why that footnote exists is key to understanding why Michael Burry is betting against this stock. On August 6, Michael Burry revealed two new short positions. It started with Oracle, shorting the stock at $ 144.63. Their second target was Nebius Group, shorted at $211.77. In his statement, Burry described the operation as, and I quote: "a bit like shooting fish in a barrel." He decided to sell the stock directly short instead of buying put options.

With implied volatility in Nebius options exceeding 100% , the contracts had a high premium. Burry decided to take the direct risk of the short position rather than pay for excessively expensive leverage. Nebius is the Dutch holding company that remained after the Russian tech giant Yandex sold its domestic business in 2024.

It emerged with a significant cash reserve, a team of engineers, and a data center in Finland. Since then, growth has been significant. In the first quarter of 2026, revenues grew 684% year-on-year. The company now claims to have an annualized rate of $1.92 billion and over $40 billion in contracted revenue with Microsoft and Meta.

This chart shows the volatility that Burry is navigating. The stock has fallen 37% from its peak, but remains significantly above its 52-week low. Burry set its position at 211.77 ahead of the second quarter earnings call on Wednesday, August 12. One of the fastest- growing infrastructure deployments in the sector is now positioned directly against one of the most visible short sellers in the market.

Wednesday's results will provide the data to see which side has the correct reading of the numbers. The core of the argument involves depreciation. This is the accounting method of distributing the cost of an asset over the years in which it generates money. These figures show how subjective this calculation can be.

Amazon recently reduced the lifespan of its servers to 5 years, adding $677 million in depreciation expenses. Meanwhile, Meta extended the lifespan of its servers to 5.5 years, saving $2.9 billion. Both companies use similar hardware, but reach different conclusions about its lifespan. For AI hardware, physical wear and tear is rarely the cause of its end.

In contrast, GPUs are being phased out due to the cost of the work they perform. In July, Nebius validated the first production rack of Nvidia's Vera Rubin generation. This hardware offers 22 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth per GPU. That's 2.8 times the performance of the Blackwell generation .

This chart illustrates the metric that defines older hardware. Nvidia's data indicates that Vera Rubin produces inference tokens at 1/10 the cost of Blackwell. This creates a challenge for the economic life of the chip. A 2-year-old Blackwell rack might work perfectly, but if the rack in the next aisle produces the same output for 90% less, the price needs to come down to remain competitive.

Despite this technological shift, Nebius revealed in its first-quarter letter to shareholders that it is moving in the opposite direction. They revised the lifespan of their servers to 4 to 5 years. Although 5 years is still more conservative than Coreweave's 6-year timeline, it's a significant change in the face of a rapidly accelerating hardware cycle.

Extending the accounting life of a GPU while its unit production cost is surpassed by newer generations creates a disconnect. This can make a company appear more profitable on paper while the real economic value of its assets decreases. The report for the first quarter of 2026 provided the first glimpse into this disconnect.

Nebius reported $399 million in revenue and a positive adjusted EBITDA of $129.5 million. This waterfall chart breaks down the reported net profit. The company reported a non-monetary gain of $780 million by increasing the value of its stake in ClickHouse. Excluding that accounting entry, the underlying operating loss was approximately $159 million.

At the same time, Nebius reported $2.26 billion in operating cash flow. The balance sheet shows the source of that cash. Deferred revenues increased by $3.2 billion in 90 days. This is cash paid by customers in advance for computing time that has not yet been delivered. It is a liability on the balance sheet , not a realized gain.

Capital intensity is shown here. Nebius plans to spend up to $25 billion on capital expenditures this year to generate about $ 3.2 billion in revenue. For every dollar of revenue recorded this year, the company is spending approximately $7 on capital. This expansion is driven by advance payments from customers, rather than by operating profits.

The company is scaling up by leveraging its balance sheet and customer commitments. Standard discounted cash flow models are difficult to apply here, since free cash flow is structurally negative. When spending in the tens of billions exceeds revenue, assumptions about terminal value become the primary driver of the model's outcome.

We can use an inverse performance calculation to test the company's own guidance. First, we determined the revenue per dollar of hardware with an output run rate of 8 billion and 29.6 billion in plant; Nebia generates $0.27 in annual revenue for every dollar spent on equipment. Next, we calculate the cost of that equipment.

Using the new useful life of 5 years for the servers and 20 years for the electrical infrastructure, the combined depreciation rate is 15.5% per year. When we divide the depreciation cost by the revenue return, the math reveals the problem. Depreciation expenses consume 57% of every dollar of income.

To reach the operating break-even point , Nevius needs an adjusted EBITDA margin of at least 57%. This table shows the impact of the footnote we discussed earlier. Extending the useful life of servers from 4 to 5 years reduces annual depreciation by $788 million . That adds $3.08 per share to reported earnings without changing the underlying cash flow .

The bullish argument assumes that this performance will improve. If Nevius can generate 35 cents per dollar of plant as the new capacity matures in 2027, the required break-even margin falls to 44%. This would bring the business model closer to the company's actual margin guidance. Current technical indicators are neutral.

The relative strength index is at 46.6 and the MACD momentum is currently fading from its recent high. Our probability matrix uses these variables to arrive at a weighted reasonable value of $183. While the bullish case is significant at $490, the bearish case is zero. This is because the company's enormous debt burden takes precedence over equity in any scenario where margins do not cover the cost of hardware.

The current valuation is a bet on near-perfect execution. If the company fails to meet its plant performance or margin targets, the debt burden creates the risk of total capital elimination. To evaluate this operation, you must answer four specific questions. One: Do you think the hardware produces 27 cents or 35 cents of revenue per dollar spent? This single variable determines whether the business model is viable. Two: Can a GPU generate a profitable rental income for five years? If newer chips offer a 90% cost advantage, older hardware could face price pressure much sooner than accounting assumes.

Third, are you willing to own a stock whose reported earnings depend on a subjective estimate in an accounting footnote? Four, what's your plan if the stock falls by 40%? Investing in Nvidia requires measuring your personal risk tolerance in the face of these binary results. Michael Burry has a mixed track record in 2026.

While his short position against Oracle has been profitable, his bet against Palantir was recently undermined by a strong earnings report. His observation about GPU depreciation is based on the current hardware cycle, but its timing in operation remains to be seen. Since the downside risk in a bearish scenario is zero, any position in the stock must be sized to reflect that risk.

This is not a short-term operation . At $183, Nvidia is fairly priced according to its own objectives, but those objectives depend on aggressive assumptions about how long its hardware will remain relevant . For Wednesday's report , focus on three metrics : revenue generated per dollar of installed plant, the trajectory of adjusted EBITDA margin, and any additional changes to the useful life assumption.
