Have you ever wondered how a common man, starting with just ₹5,000, went on to become the king of the Indian stock market ? This is the story of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, whom the world knows as the Big Bull of Dal Street. Born on 5 July 1960 in Mumbai, Rakesh's father was an Income Tax Officer. Since childhood, Rakesh used to hear about the stock market.
One day he asked his father why share prices change every day? The father replied that it depends on the news from all over the world. From that very day, the stock market bug took root in Rakesh's mind. Rakesh completed his Chartered Accountancy studies. But his heart was somewhere else. In 1985, he entered the stock market with a capital of just ₹5,000.
But the real game started in 1986 when Rakesh bought shares of Tata T. At that time the price of one share was only ₹43. Within a few months, the share reached ₹143. Rakesh made his first big profit and realized that this was his true destiny. But the path to the stock market was not so easy. The Harshad Mehta scam in 1992 shook the entire market.
Millions of investors lost their money. Rakesh also had to suffer huge losses. But he did not give up. He used to say that the market always falls and rises. Only the one who has courage becomes the real winner. Time passed and around 2002 to 2003, Rakesh took a decision that changed his entire life.
He made a huge investment in Titan Company when the company's shares were available at a very cheap price. Many people called him crazy but Rakesh had full confidence in his research and his wisdom. In the coming years, Titan's shares started touching the sky and Rakesh's holding turned into thousands of crores of rupees.
In the year 2008, when the economy of the entire world was shaken. Rakesh's wealth also declined drastically. A large part of his net worth was wiped out in a single year. But Rakesh always used to say that the biggest strength in the stock market is patience. Instead of panicking and selling their shares, they waited for the market to pick up again, and it did exactly what they had hoped.
In the next few years, the market made a tremendous comeback and Rakesh's wealth increased many times more than before. Rakesh's wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala also stood with him at every step. Together they formed a company called Rare Enterprises, the name of which was derived from the initials of their names.
Gradually, Rakesh's portfolio grew so large that he came to be known as the Warren Buffett of India. The speciality of Rakesh was that he was not just an investor but had become like a guru for common investors. Whenever he gave his opinion on the market on TV channels , the entire Dalal Street listened attentively.
His straightforward and outspoken words helped millions of small investors understand the stock market. But Rakesh had one more dream left. He wanted to start his own airline company. After years of hard work, his dream finally came true in August 2022 and the first flight of Akasa Air took off. The whole country was celebrating his success.
But who knew that this happiness would not last long. Rakesh was not well for the last several years. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala said goodbye to this world on August 14, 2022, just a week after the launch of Akasa Air. The entire stock market was stunned. The eyes of investors across the country became moist after hearing the news of his death.
Even while leaving, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala left behind assets worth thousands of crores of rupees and a valuable lesson. He proved that with just ₹5000, a person can achieve great heights through his hard work and intelligence. Even today his name is taken as an inspiration on Dalal Street.
