01. Inflation is about as consistent a force in the universe as entropy. Actually, come to think of it, inflation is basically just money entropy. And the entropy be going real hard in the PC tech space at the moment. But what if I told you that there are some components that are just immune to inflation?

02. They're not the most powerful components, but they still have been the same price for the last like 3 years, and that's very exciting. So today we're going to have a look at them. Now there are a couple of entropydefying components that we're going to be looking at in today's video. The first one is a CPU and it's the Ryzen 55500, a six core 12thread CPU which has been available for as long as I can remember for just over $100 Canadian.

03. And this is clearly a very attractive price point because on Amazon Canada, over 500 people have bought one in the last month, which is a huge amount for Amazon Canada. It's a very popular little CPU now. It's not nearly as fancy as its X3D, touting bigger siblings, but I think it's one of the reasons why its price hasn't budged for years now.

04. And another inflationdeefying characteristic of the 5500 is that it's still on the AM4 platform, which means you can get used motherboards for not very much money. And the platform uses DDR4, which is much more affordable than DDR5 at the moment. I mean, don't get me wrong, DDR4 prices are still crazy.

05. And if you do have to buy RAM for this system, well, condolences. Uh, but at least you're better off buying RAM for this than you are for an AM5 platform. just CPU. And then the other entropyresistant component that we're having a look at in today's video is the AMD RX580. This graphics card's been around for so long, I'm pretty sure it taught Marcus Aurelius how to write.

06. Now, in all fairness, the RX 580s price has been on a roller coaster over the course of its long long life. Every time that there's been like a crypto mining apocalypse, its price has surged quite a bit. But the graphics card is old enough now that you can still buy various definitely legitimate versions of it on AliExpress for around $150 Canadians.

07. A price that it's been available at for a very long time. Now, one thing to note with most of the versions that you see on AliExpress is that they're the slightly cut down SP 2038 versions of the RX 580. So, unfortunately for a lot of these cards, they have had like an eighth of their brains sliced off, but you can still get used full-fledged RX 580s on like eBay or locally for much less money.

08. I would personally go that route, but either way, you have to be real aware of which version you're getting. And in today's video, I will be testing both versions of the RX 580 in modern games to see how much performance you're losing going with the labbotomized one. Another cool thing about the RX 580 is that the 8 gig version of it is still very popular.

09. That's like the main version you find around. And considering the kind of GPU that you're working with, 8 gigs of video memory should hold up pretty well. You could really hear the confidence in my voice there. But with that, we're going to pair the Ryzen 55500 with an RX 580, one of the cut down weird AliExpress versions of it, nonetheless, to form the ultimate inflation busting duo, and see how they perform.

10. And the testing for this video started off um very well. Initially, I wanted to test the 5500 in my trusty old Asus X370 stricks board, a motherboard which may as well be my congenital twin, and it's never done me wrong until today. After I finished putting together the box setup, I just couldn't get a video out of the damn thing.

11. My first thought was that it had to be my capture card setup because for me, capture cards have just been legendarily unreliable. I don't know what it is with these damn things, but they don't work half the time. But when I still wasn't getting video out with the system plugged directly into the monitor, I was starting to get worried, especially considering that I had this abomination RX 580 plugged into a different system, and it was working fine in there.

12. But when a CMOS reset didn't fix anything, I decided to with great effort shift the whole setup over into a different AM4 motherboard. So, now that we've finally gotten the damn thing to post, it's just reading one of our sticks of RAM. That's not good. Oh, and it's it's also crashed. It's not doing anything.

13. Oh my god. So, it seems like the RAM also wasn't happy because when I switched it out for a different 16 gig DDR4 kit, the system booted and I could install some fresh Windows 11 on it. Now, the newer game that we're starting off with is Cyberpunk, which came out like 10 years ago, but you know, that's that's what can you do.

14. Wo! The settings that it defaults to are real concerning just straight off the bat because it's low with a bunch of fidelity FX on. And initially for the testing, I kept everything at low, but I turned off all of the upscaling. Okay, it's not an immediate abomination. We're sitting in the 40s. It It feels a little bit more input laggy than I was expecting it to feel at this frame rate, but I mean, yeah, look, it's running.

15. Our GPU is very much the bottleneck in this situation. We've got 100%. It's just pegged there. And the CPU is actually doing fine. 42% utilization. I am going to drop a higherend GPU in here later just to see how the 5500 scales in terms of more GPU power. Oh, my car is on fire. I then decided to try Quality Fidelity FX 3.0.

16. Our frame rate hasn't jumped a huge amount. We've just gone from like the lowish 40s to 50. Uh, but it definitely feels better. Uh, visually there's a big difference. I'd say that it looks quite a lot smoother. And by smoothness here, I mean like a Vaselining down of texture detail. But either way, with these settings, the game was very playable.

17. Good job, little inflation team. Although, a lot of the other new games I tried didn't go quite as well. Um, that's not great. I mean, we have 8 gigs of dedicated video memory. So, I'm I'm assuming the the not a rate trace issue is the main problem here. That sucks. Your graphics card isn't supported.

18. This is another game. Oh my god. Okay. Well, I mean, at least that's something we can do something about. I then restarted the system so that I could change the secure boot settings in the BIOS, which led to the system crashing a couple times while booting, which got me real worried that another piece of hardware was slowly busy dying on me.

19. And it turned out I was right. The random AliExpress RX 580 was just done. It didn't feel like outputting video signals anymore. So, I had to switch over to the full-fledged Asus RX 580. And to put the performance difference between these two cards into perspective with Cyberpunk, the only game I could get running on the AliExpress card, we got an average of about 52 frames pers, which jumped to 65 frames pers on the full-fledged ASUS card.

20. Bear in mind for this result, I don't know how sound of mind the AliExpress 580 was here, but that was the only result I could get out of it before it kicked the bucket. I think I'm going to do everything on low. Definitely dropped to 1080p. Wo, is this on low? We're definitely going to have to turn some upscaling on.

21. That is not going great. We're going to say upscaling technique off FSR and we'll do quality. Now bear in mind again this is not with the SP 2038 version. This is the full-fledged RX 580. I mean the game still looks really good despite having everything on low settings and uh FSR also works really well on Battlefield 6.

22. I feel like the uh visual quality impact isn't as big as it is in Cyberpunk. So that's good. Now again, like with Cyberpunk, we do have quite a lot of CPU headroom, but we've just got like 40 frames pers happening, and it sometimes hits 50% utilization, which isn't super promising. I'm really excited to see how a higherend GPU kind of handles this Ryzen 5 5500.

23. I then tried some online multiplayer where aside from me accidentally picking a real butt cheeks gun, the game was very playable on this little inflation busting duo. I then decided to try some Unreal Engine 5 games. Considering the doom, the dark ages in Forza 6 didn't work. I didn't have high hopes for these.

24. Okay, well, our first Unreal Engine 5 game seems to have launched. So, we're going to go into the display and graphics. Obviously, we need to drop the 1080p. Uh, we're going to turn VSYNC off. Super sampling is off for now. Although, that's almost definitely not going to work. Look at that. I mean, 32 frames pers and we don't have any super scaling or whatever happening.

25. It actually kind of feels all right. Uh, the game does look very mushy. Do we really not have upscaling going on? The game The game looks like it's been regurgitated in front of our eyes by a sick cat. FSR1. Apparently, that was our best bet. So, I turned it on quality settings. I guess the sharpening effect of the Fidelity FX does help a little bit.

26. And now the frame rate is better. It's kind of running fine. Right. What's really interesting about it is that despite the fact that we have our 8 gigs of video memory, uh none of the games have gotten even close to using it, which makes sense. Our GPU is very much the limitation in this use case. Hey, Stalker 2 also launches.

27. So, Unreal Engine 5 seems to be fine with the RX 580. So, it's just some other newer games. Wasn't expecting that, but either way, wow, the game looks so bad. It looks terrible. I mean, it's just quality FSR. Why is it so smeary? And by smeary, I mean not sharp. Like, this is pretty rough looking. Uh, but I guess it feels okay.

28. At which point we have a good indication of how our RX 580 handles modern games. But we've barely put our Ryzen 55500 through its paces. Besides, the CPU manages to do surprisingly well at Cinebench R20, so it should be able to keep up with a much faster GPU than the RX 580. So, let's see how it manages.

29. an RX960 XT, which is one of the few 16 gig VRAM graphics cards available today that doesn't cost like a billion dollars. Having said that, they still are almost $100 over MSRP, which is pretty bleak. Okay, now it's not the jump in frame rate that's surprising to me. What's surprising to me is the CPU temperature and power draw situation.

30. So, with the much higher load on the CPU, it's jumped to 77C with just 7 watts of power draw. Does that make sense? It almost definitely doesn't make sense. It was the same thing when we had the RX 580 in the system. And it's not like the CPU is not doing anything here. We're getting solid frame rates.

31. So, I'm pretty sure we've either got a power draw sensor issue or MSI After Burner really needs to lay off the crack. But either way, our 5500 is holding up with the 9060 XT surprisingly well, and Cyberpunk is actually one of those games that is very CPUbound. Like, it rails your CPU at higher frame rates.

32. So, this is pretty impressive. It's also worth noting that I upped the settings from 1080p low to 1080p high here, and we're still getting a significant boost over the RX 580, as you'd hope. And then before switching to Battlefield 6, I decided to drop a bigger air cooler on our Ryzen 55500 cuz the stock Wraith Stealth seems to be struggling quite a bit here.

33. So with Battlefield 6, I'm using the same settings as with the RX 580. So this is 1080p low and we're getting about 120 frames per second. I mean, it's fluctuating a lot. It's all over the place. Uh but it's it's way faster. But what's the most interesting part about this is the fact that again we're getting 100% of our GPU utilization.

34. So this little Ryzen 55500, it's hanging in there. Look at that. That's is good. At which point I decided to really bear back our little Ryzen and seeing how it handles a 9070 XT. And straight off the bat, not great. It didn't go super well. Aside from the graphics card occasionally saying that it was being utilized 100%, it was obviously lying because its power draw was much lower than is normal for this card and I barely gained frame rate in Cyberpunk.

35. And the story gets even worse with Battlefield 6 where I got the same frame rate as with the 9060 XT. Although despite the 5500 getting its teeth kicked in here, I think it held up pretty well. And when it comes to the kind of games that most people spend most of their time playing, esports titles, our little inflationresistant duo provides a really solid gaming experience.

36. It makes complete sense why they're still so wildly popular. Which brings me to the end of the video. Thank you very much for watching. Subscribe to the channel if you enjoyed the video, and until the next one, bye-bye. Heat.
