Eastern only on Yahoo Finance comm they covered many many topics but joining us now to talk more about Libra as well as the recent surge in Bitcoin in 2019 is Genesis trading CEO Michael Mauro Michael morning thanks for coming on well we just showed that clip of Jamie Dimon talking about Facebook Libra coin it's interesting because JPM launched its own JPM coin in February although not really a true cryptocurrency more of an internal settlement token but just first year you're kind of rapid reaction to what Dimon said about Facebook's crypto push I guess is that you wouldn't actually call the Facebook when a crypto currency the digital currency but sort of a centralized form but as we kind of think about cryptocurrency centrally I kind of format I'm I do think that Facebook's play is all about peer-to-peer so it is sort of the competitor to the zel product they I'm just gonna mention which is slightly I was in kind of different than the Bitcoin kind of traditional cryptocurrency play but I think that's right I think it is a way to disrupt these rails and think about things and getting retailers and kind of consumers to the idea of having non-sovereign store of value and relying on something that is not government back kind of make payments on the world it's interesting when you say that a more of a competitor's elde into Bitcoin sounds like more of a bank coin really because initially people worried oh is Libre bad for bitcoins seems like your tickets no I don't think so I think that Bitcoin you know early on call it 2012-2013 lots of possible use case for vehicle and one that was certainly Global Payments and moving money around the world no one's actually expending Bitcoin right it's kind of hard to kind of do there's taxes to kind of worry about and so it really hasn't kind of taken off of the payment mechanism it's much more of that speculative use ace digital gold narrative that I think is really gonna take a hold it's not less so on the payment side we may have a political reaction I mean obviously that mutters or she's coming here next month the Senate's gonna have its own separate here a lot of concern about what exactly this means at a time when there's that's about Facebook and its IVA C policies is that our warranted based on what you understand it's it's one of these situations where for a smaller company than Facebook try to do this and none of this is happening yeah frankly right um its usual concerns about AML and kyc money laundering type of issue which is sort of a FinCEN or SEC that a dirty question central banks around the world they're not weighing in if some startup tried to kind of do so Facebook is clearly facing issues that other companies would not probably fare kind of given the privacy and things like that which is probably why well you know Facebook really hasn't come out and talked about this as their project trying to get other people involved and so that they're just part of the consortium even though they kind of help bring it to this far to help say hey this isn't all about us were you surprised at all to hear Fed chair Jerome Powell actually say yes we have been speaking with Facebook about this new cryptocurrency project I think that the fact that a company like Facebook is coming out with something like this and ignore it right if you're a central bank around the world you can't pretend oh that's just a start-up kind of doing something over here that might kind of do something I think with billions of data for people around the is taken ignore I think Facebook has issues that a coinbase would not see all right Michael let's zoom out a little bit and talk about just bitcoins price surged at this time yesterday was up 240 percent on the year so far then it kind of fell back a little bit but certainly seeing a ton of momentum it did such 13,000 got close to 14,000 why do you think that bitcoin is up so much this year and my personal take not really about Facebook you certainly saw a lot of headlines in last two weeks ago with Facebook launching a cryptocurrency Bitcoin is up thanks to that but it sounds like this time it's really different than the end of 2017 I agree with you I think you know Bitcoin was up forty two hundred percent by the time the Facebook Libre announcement kind of came out so the momentum the crypto winter are thawing that was well underway and I think that certainly it kind of potentially added some marginal tailwind that's the class but it is by far not not the concern I think the big reason for why I think the big 2019 price Ron was that it still remains a momentum great I think there still plenty of leverage in the system and people talking why did big coin fall so much in 2018 I think the sharp rebound is partially a reaction to the sharp decline that was in 2008 and frankly we think think about Bitcoin as possible digital gold actually trading more like an option on digital gold right I think volatility expects the price of Bitcoin far more and that it has the option and the potential to become digital gold it's clearly not sitting at 200 billion dollars and take over a multi-trillion dollar market cap but it has a potential to
